REQUEST: Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United fans to chant for his players rather than him

The new United manager was serenaded by supporters throughout the Red Devils' 2-0 win at Wigan yesterday in his first game in charge.

Over 5,000 fans made the trip to the DW Stadium and took less than a minute to start chanting about the Portuguese boss.

Mourinho has thanked the fans for their support but spoke of his hope that his players would receive similar praise in future games.

"My reaction is that honestly I would prefer them to go with the players," Mourinho said.

"I prefer them to go with the team, I prefer them to go with Man United.

"They are the ones on the pitch and they are the ones that need support and if I could tell them that I would tell them directly: First the players. I am the last one after them.

"It is nice to feel welcome and that they are behind the team. It is nice to feel that the things I liked in the game they also liked, you could feel from some of their reactions that they liked it.

"For me what I found was unbelievable for the first time in my career was the support was like it was a crucial Premier League match. Unbelievable.

"Let's go step by step, next Monday some of the guys are joining, next Tuesday some of the guys are going to join for China. So step by step, we go step by step."
