TARGET: Liverpool are thought to be interested in the Southampton striker

Long is in high demand after enjoying the best season of his career, scoring ten Premier League goals for the first time.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino watched Long score in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 friendly draw with Holland last week sitting alongside the front-man’s agent Pat Dolan.

Liverpool made enquiries for former Hull, Reading and West Bromwich ace Long in January and Jurgen Klopp remains an admirer.

Long, 29, has two years left on the four-year contract he signed after completing an £11m move from Hull as one of Ronald Koeman’s first signings.

Saints have already tied goalkeeper Fraser Forster, defender Virgil van Dijk and midfielder James Ward-Prowse to long term deals and Long is next on their hit list.

Securing their top stars is key to convincing manager Koeman to commit his future to the south coast.

Koeman’s advisers will hold talks with Southampton director of football Les Reed this week as Saints try and convince the Dutchman to extend his stay at St Mary’s beyond next summer.
