The midfielder is poised to leave Inter Milan as a free agent after failing to secure a new deal with the Italian giants.
Now he could be set to be re-united with former Dutch boss Van Gaal, who is desperate to strengthen his midfield options this summer.
De Jong, who is also a target of Ajax, admits his future is up in the air and he said: "I haven't decided yet and I don't know when I will make that decision.
"It could be at the end of April or at the end of the season.
"It's still too early to say where I'll be playing next term. It could be Milan, Ajax or another club. There are several options, as I will be a free agent.
"I'll take a little time so that I can make the best decision."
