Manchester United's £90million transfer target Romelu Lukaku will have to appear in an American court next season after being arrested on holiday.

Everton's Lukaku, due to be unveiled as Jose Mourinho's major summer signing early next week, has been ordered to attend Los Angeles Airport Court House on October 2 after being cited for excessive noise at a party thrown at his rented mansion in Beverly Hills last weekend.

The Beverly Hills Police Department revealed in a statement they had been to the address five times on the same evening to warn Lukaku about the noise. The incident is a major embarrassment for the Belgium forward, 24, on the eve of his major transfer.

United said on Saturday they had agreed a £75m fee for Lukaku with an extra £15m in potential add-ons but within an hour the popular US showbiz website TMZ had revealed his trouble with police.

It was later confirmed by a spokesperson for the Beverly Hills Police Department, who said: 'On July 2, 2017, at approximately 8pm, Beverly Hills Police Department officers arrested a 24-year-old male by the name of Romelu Lukaku Bolignoli. Bolignoli received a misdemeanour citation for Beverly Hills Municipal Code Violation 5-1-104 — Excessive noise.

'The citation was issued after officers responded to five other noise complaints from the same location, which resulted in verbal warnings. These noise violations occurred at a residence in Beverly Hills where Bolignoli was temporarily residing.

'Bolignoli was released at the scene with the citation and was not physically arrested. He is scheduled to appear at the Los Angeles Airport Courthouse on October 2.'

United, who entertain Crystal Palace on September 30 before Lukaku is due to meet up with Belgium for World Cup qualifiers, insist the timetable of the deal is unaffected.
