Aston Villa are aiming to complete Axel Tuanzebe’s loan move from Manchester United in time for this weekend.
A number of clubs have been chasing the young defender but it is believed Steve Bruce presented the most compelling case.
Jose Mourinho has been reluctant to let the 20-year-old leave this month with Eric Bailly injured so far in January but United and Villa are working on concluding a deal.
Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe could join Aston Villa on loan by this weekend
Tuanzebe is primarily a centre-back but can operate in either full-back position and could even perform midfield roles, Villa hope.
Bruce’s side are out of the FA Cup but travel to Sheffield United next Tuesday.
‘Tuanzebe's a very good player that is not having lots of possibilities to play here,’ Mourinho said.
‘No chance we give up on such a talented boy. But it is something we are thinking about, a loan until the end of the season.’
Villa have allowed right-back Ritchie De Laet to leave for Royal Antwerp on loan as Bruce’s shuffles his squad for a promotion charge.
Tuanzebe made his Premier League debut for United against Arsenal in May last season
