Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Michael Carrick has accepted an invitation to join United's coaching staff at the end of the season.

Carrick, who turns 37 in July, underwent minor heart surgery after feeling unwell following a Carabao Cup game against Burton Albion in September.

The former England midfielder has recently returned to training and could play for United again, but he is expected to call time on his career in the summer.

'I think it's a good decision for the team and a good decision for him to finish playing football and not injured or with some problem,' said Mourinho.


'So we are all happy and at the end of the season I expect him to join unless he changes his mind.

'The club would be very happy for him to do that and I would be very happy also.'

Carrick joined United from Tottenham in 2006 and he has gone on to make 459 first-team appearances for the club.

During his time at Old Trafford, Carrick has won five Premier League titles.

He has also won three League Cups, one FA Cup and two European trophies, including the Champions League in 2008.
