Manchester-born Mitchell joined United aged 10, and has gone onto to feature in the England youth teams, where he was part of the 2014 under 17 European Championship winners.
Hearts boss Craig Levein has had to fight off interest from Premier League clubs for the youngster, who opted for first-team football in Scotland.
Mitchell will be providing support for the consistently injury-prone Manchester City loanee Ashley Smith-Brown.
The 20-year-old has been a consistent figure in Manchester United's under 23 side and turned down offers from Premier League clubs to move to the Scottish Premier League
