Alarm bells are ringing for Brighton after their abject surrender against Huddersfield Town

  • Brighton suffered a third defeat in their last five games against Huddersfield
  • Chris Hughton's side have dropped to 13th in the Premier League table
  • The strugglers travel to Wembley to take on Tottenham in midweek

On this evidence, Tottenham can count on a cosy three points against Brighton on Wednesday, while Chelsea will be less than comfortable on their visit to the vibrant John Smith's Stadium.

Never mind the single point by which Huddersfield now lead their fellow Premier League newcomers after a match both should have viewed in the must-win category.

It looked more like half the length of the Premier League separated these sides.

Perhaps just as well, then, that Brighton players were talking afterwards about 'not pointing fingers' — they wouldn't have had enough to go round for this total no-show.

Unless the all-encompassing digit jabbed by one-time Spurs defender Chris Hughton sparks a response, the Brighton boss's former club will be strolling at Wembley on Wednesday.

Huddersfield will be guarding against a similar backlash from Chelsea 24 hours earlier, after their shock defeat at West Ham.

But the Terriers posted some warning signals of their own with a dominant display.

Striker Tom Ince doesn't think 'Chelsea or anyone' will fancy entering this part of West Yorkshire.

He said: 'We get in people's faces, we stop people playing, we win our tackles, we win our battles. We beat Manchester United here and we ran Manchester City close.'

That spirit saw David Wagner's team take a victory lap on Saturday, having threatened to run riot on the back of Steve Mounie's brace.

For Brighton, it wasn't only about defensive frailties. Skipper Bruno admitted Brighton could not cope with Huddersfield's pressing game.

'We need to see characters,' he said.
