Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists he feels 'sorry' for his players after defeat by Manchester United as he admits the result 'is very difficult to accept'
- Arsenal lost 3-1 against Manchester United on Saturday in the Premier League
- Arsene Wenger saw his Arsenal side gift United two goals in the first 12 minutes
- They failed to take anything from game despite having 33 shots on goal
- After the final whistle, Wenger claimed he was 'angry' with Arsenal's defeat
Arsene Wenger said he felt sorry for his players after they imploded to lose 3-1 against Manchester United at the Emirates.
Wenger saw his side gift United two goals in the first 12 minutes on Saturday and failed to take anything from the game despite having an incredible 33 shots on goal.
Afterwards Wenger was asked if he took some satisfaction from the game and he said: ‘Yes of course, the spirit of the players, the attitude and quality of our combinations were top class.
Arsene Wenger was angered by Arsenal's 3-1 defeat by Manchester United on Saturday
‘But we have the experience to get better out of a game like that, you know.
‘I take a lot of positives and I feel sorry for the players, that’s why I’m angry.
‘We have lost games here against Man United where we didn’t deserve anything.
‘But tonight, what makes you angry is that you produce that performance and in the end you have nothing to show for it. That’s very difficult to accept.’
Arsenal did produce some fluent attacking play against Jose Mourinho’s United but were hampered by kamikaze defending and the brilliance of visiting goalkeeper David de Gea.
Arsenal boss Wenger added: ‘He is an outstanding goalkeeper, I don’t want to take anything away from him.
After the final whistle at the Emirates, the Arsenal boss said he 'felt sorry for the players'
‘But we had situations where, despite De Gea, we should have scored.
‘I am just angry because when you play like that, and you have not even a point, it’s unbelievable.
‘And afterwards you have to listen to a lot of conclusions. But at the end of the day, I believe when you produce a quality performance like we did today, you have to win the game.’
Wenger refused to follow Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino’s lead and rule his team out of the Premier League title race even though they are fifteen points behind leaders Manchester City.
‘I am not Pochettino, I am Arsene Wenger,’ he said.
Midfielder Ander Herrera claims United are 'going to find our best form very soon'
‘I am here to fight as long as I can, as long as mathematically it’s possible you have to fight, you cannot give any other message out.’
United face neighbours City in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford next weekend and are their great rivals’ only realistic challengers.
United’s Ander Herrera said: ‘Everything is very good and we are going to find our best form very soon. We are second and are chasing the top of the table.
‘We are optimistic.’
United forward Jess Lingard scored two of their goals and Herrera said: ‘He is on fire’.
