It is just like they tell you in school. 'Don't play to the whistle,' the sports teacher says. 'Just stand in the middle with your hand in the air, as the game goes on around you. It's bound to work out in your favour.' And so it was that Arsenal lost to Manchester City.

At the time of the third goal, the game was – somehow – in the balance. City had been the better side, but Arsenal had stuck in there and benefitted from the introduction of a £50m striker in Alexandre Lacazette.

Manchester City remain unbeaten having won 10 of their first 11 games and they are running away with the title it seems.

Arsenal though drop down below Liverpool into sixth on goal difference.

Fallout from the Etihad Stadium action is on the homepage, but now our attention turns to Chelsea vs Manchester United and Everton vs Watford which you can join me for on this link.

I'll leave you with an updated league table as we switch focus to the 4.30pm drama...

16:07
FULL-TIME: Manchester City 3-1 Arsenal
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola gives his side the thumbs up during the win over Arsenal
16:06

90+3min: Silly from Ozil, who having just been booked then stupidly barges into Fabian Delph battling for an aerial ball. Referee Michael Oliver elects to just award a free-kick.

16:04

90+1min: As well as a defeat there will be a small fine heading Arsenal's way as Mesut Ozil now picks up a yellow card - the Gunners' sixth of the game (all in this half) as we enter four added minutes.

16:02

89min: That should just about be that for Arsenal. Manchester City are playing keep-ball and are playing well enough to bring up 'ole' cheers from fans following each completed pass.

16:01
Manchester City substitution

87min: And on comes Bernardo Silva as he replaces Leroy Sane. Manchester City within sight of a 15th consecutive victory across all competitions.

15:59

84min: A final change on the way for City with Bernardo Silva warming up. Another one of those luxury substitutions...

15:56

81min: Arsenal haven't quite given up on this, Arsene Wenger's changes reflect that, but you do feel Manchester City are looking much more comfortable now they have that two-goal lead.

Gabriel Jesus (left) of Manchester City scores his side's third goal at the Etihad Stadium

15:54
Arsenal and Manchester City substitutions

78min: Both teams make changes as Ilkay Gundogan replaces Raheem Sterling for Manchester City.

Arsenal meanwhile use their final two changes as Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud replace Alex Iwobi and Xhaka.

15:52

77min: Another Gunners booking. This time Sanchez catches the referee's attention after chopping down Silva.

15:47
GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 3-1 Arsenal

74min: This could be the goal that kills off Arsenal - and it's a controversial one. David Silva appears a fraction offside as he collects a byline pass from Fernandinho, before he squares for Gabriel Jesus to restore City's two-goal lead.

Granit Xhaka is booked for his protests afterwards.

15:46

72min: It's become a rather open game inside the last 20 minutes as Nicolas Otamendi is booked for clattering into Lacazette.

15:42

69min: Chance for City! De Bruyne flicks a corner towards the back post where Jesus's point-blank effort is fired straight at Cech who manages to divert the ball away to safety. Good keeping for the Arsenal stopper.

Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette nutmegged Manchester City keeper Ederson to pull a goal back

15:41

68min: Another booking for the Gunners as Koscielny brings down De Bruyne inside the Arsenal half.

15:37
GOAL! Manchester City 2-1 ARSENAL

65min: It's been coming folks. Arsenal launch an attack through the centre and after Ramsey plays Alexandre Lacazette inside the box the striker blasts a sublime finish through the legs of Ederson to give the Gunners renewed hope.

15:35
Manchester City substitution

62min: A first change for Manchester City as Aguero is applauded off the field to be replaced by Gabriel Jesus.

What a luxury of a substitution that is for Pep Guardiola to make by the way.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola gestures from the Etihad Stadium touchline
15:34

60min: Arsenal have responded well since the second goal as they have tried to take the game to City, although Lacazette is booked for a foul on David Silva that prevented a City counter attack.

15:30
Arsenal substitution

57min: The anchor has gone up from Arsene Wenger as he replaces Francis Coquelin and sends on Alexandre Lacazette.

Sergio Aguero converts Manchester City's second goal from the penalty spot
Aguero (left) celebrates his 179th Manchester City goal along with team-mate Leroy Sane
15:29

56min: Ederson has been brilliant for City this term, but he nearly makes a costly clanger! The City keeper fumbles a routine stop, but with the ball heading over the line the summer signing just about retrieves the ball before being barged into the net by Aaron Ramsey - winning a free-kick in the process.

15:28
From former Premier League referee and Sportsmail's Graham Poll

'Good decision by Michael Oliver to award penalty as Monreal fouls Sterling. Clever play from the City forward.'

15:22
GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 Arsenal

50min: Nacho Monreal clumsily brings down Raheem Sterling for a penalty, and picks up the booking, before Sergio Aguero sends Cech the wrong way from 12 yards with an effort that hits the post and goes in.

Some might say a bit fortunate, others may argue it's a perfect penalty for his 179th City goal.

15:22
PENALTY (Manchester City)
Nacho Monreal was booked after fouling Raheem Sterling inside the penalty box
15:21
From Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler at the Etihad Stadium

'Sergio Aguero has swapped his golden boots for a pair of black ones at half-time. City’s record goalscorer hasn’t played badly today at all, helping create a number of chances for his teammates, but his one effort on goal was off target.'

15:18
SECOND HALF: Arsenal restart with no changes from either side

15:12
PLAYER WATCH: Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)

A waste of an Ozil? We can all agree that Mesut Ozil's strengths lie in providing attacking creativity for Arsenal.

But his first half heat map shows him hardly anywhere near the City box - at times he is has been closer to his own goal when in possession.

15:07
A fitting end to the half...

Fitting because for all of the Manchester City dominance and chances, they have in no way won this game yet.

Pep Guardiola will be pleased with his side's lead but equally frustrated at the chances the hosts have wasted, as well as the defensive lapses that nearly allowed Arsenal an equaliser at the break.

In a game Manchster City should be leading 4-0, instead there is crucially just one goal in it and that gives Arsenal hope heading into the break and eventually the second half.

15:03
HALF-TIME: Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal
Kevin De Bruyne's goal was the difference between the teams at half-time
15:02

45+1min: Chance for Arsenal! It's not clear cut but it makes Ederson work as Alexis Sanchez holds the ball up well before playing in the supporting Aaron Ramsey whose low near post effeort is beaten away by the City stopper.

15:01

44min: There will be one added minute at the end of the half as City play keep-ball to see out the time.

15:00

41min: Four minutes before the break and there are shoots of a revival growing for Arsenal as they see a little more of the ball.

Ederson though still hasn't had a save to make and that is a problem Arsene Wenger will (probably) need to address at the break.

14:57

38min: The City chances keep on coming as Kyle Walker's low cross is nearly turned by Granit Xhaka into his own goal, with Cech making the save before Arsenal scramble clear.

The Gunners really could be, and should be, 4-0 down at this point.

Raheem Sterling (left) watches his cross go to nowhere in a good chance for Manchester City
Sterling reacts after wasting a very good chance for City to double their lead
14:55

35min: Incredible. What a chance wasted by City. Aaron Ramsey loses the ball in midfield and within seconds De Bruyne has released Sterling in acres of space down the right.

But despite the forward getting into the box, his squared pass for Sane is atrocious and nowhere his team-mate who only had to tap home as Arsenal are let off the hook.

Pep Guardiola throws his arms around on the touchline like a kid being told their trip to DisneyWorld has been cancelled.

14:50

33min: Very nearly 2-0 for City and the way it's going it would be a good reflection on the balance of play. David Silva makes an underlapping run to take a De Bruyne pass but his byline cross somehow evades a team-mate.

14:48

31min: Very comfortable for Manchester City right now. They have the lead and enjoyed 67 per cent of the possession with Arsenal struggling to get an attacking foothold in the game after a bright opening 15 minutes.

14:43

28min: Manchester City keeping up the pressure as a ball over the top finds Sterling, whose deflected cross is helped over the bar by a cautious Cech.

14:39

22min: City with their tails up now as they chase a second goal. The hosts win a corner but David Silva's delivery is well headed clear by Granit Xhaka.

14:34
GOAL! MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 Arsenal

19min: Cech isn't saving this though! The attack from the previous Kevin de Bruyne shot is recycled and after the Belgian plays a one-two with Fernandinho he darts into the box before unleashing a cracker across goal and into the bottom corner.

14:34

18min: Good save from Petr Cech who punches away a Kevin de Bruyne effort on the edge of the box.

14:32

15min: Arsenal have retreated a little since that City chance, with the hosts now dictating possession. Still no goals but this has been a decent first 15 minutes from both sides.

14:30

12min: What a chance for Manchester City! It's against the run of play but it's by far the best opportunity of the match. Mesut Ozil loses the ball in midfield and that leads to a move where Aguero feds a through ball into the box for Leroy Sane.

The forward sprints past Laurent Koscielny, who looks like he is running in treacle, before his ball across the six-yard box rolls across the face of goal with a sliding Raheem Sterling just missing out on getting a vital touch.

Think Gazza against Germany at Euro 96 - to this day I still think he might make contact every time I watch that clip.

Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez looks up to start an attack against the Manchester City defence
14:26

9min: Arsenal still on top but despite winning a couple of corners in addition to an off target free-kick from Alexis Sanchez, Ederson hasn't had anything to do in the Manchester City goal.

Sergio Aguero of Manchester City shoots at goal in the early stages of the match
14:23

6min: Arsenal have woken up a bit though since that early scare and if anything have taken control of the early stages as they probe the right side of the pitch.

14:22

3min: Arsenal, who for some reason (£££££) have decided that playing in their red home strip represents a clash with Manchester City's blue kit, have taken to the field in their black and pink trimmed away kit and nearly fall behind.

The visitors are hit on the counter attack, but as the ball is quickly played up field through Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero it results in the latter firing off target at the near post.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was given a guard of honour before the game
Aguero recently became Manchester City's all-time top scorer with 178 goals
14:13
There's a guard of honour at the Etihad Staidum

No it's not a stupidly early coronation as Premier League champions for Manchester City, who have won their last 14 games.

Instead it's for Sergio Aguero who having scored his record 178th Manchester City goal recently, is last out the tunnel to applause either side of former City strikers as well as both sets of players.

He is presented with a blue boot before lining up with his team-mates.

Back to the match, here is how the table looks following Spurs' victory earlier.

Both teams have been warming up at the Etihad Stadium...

Pep Guardiola has admitted pre-match that he is 'surprised' to see Arsenal lining up with a back four, but states his side have to be prepared for the Gunners test.

MATT BARLOW: Tottenham needed a superb curling goal from Son Heung-Min to wrestle three points off lowly Crystal Palace.

Judging off this display Roy Hogdson's men - who are stranded at the bottom of the table - are in a false position.

They had numerous opportunities at Wembley but were denied by debutant Paulo Gazzaniga in goal, though a few times could have been more clinical - Wilfried Zaha in particular who rounded the keeper but put his shot wide from a tight angle when the game was 0-0.
