Manchester City will not replicate Arsenal's Invincible record, insists Pep Guardiola: 'People say we are unbeatable, someone will beat us'

  • Manchester City face Arsenal at the Etihad stadium on Sunday afternoon
  • Pep Guardiola's side have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the Premier League
  • The City boss shrugged off claims City will replicate Arsene Wenger's Invincibles
  • Guardiola insists he will not believe the record is doable until May next year

Pep Guardiola has dismissed Manchester City's chances of emulating Arsenal's Invincibles, insisting they are more focused on beating Arsene Wenger's team at the Etihad on Sunday.

City's scintillating start to the season has led to suggestions they can go a whole season unbeaten in the league like the Arsenal team of 2003-04.

'Arsene's record belongs to him,' Guardiola said. 'We are not going to break it. He has to be calm. It was an exceptional team, something fantastic. We don' t want to break this record, but we want to play good and beat them on Sunday.

Arsenal were the last team to beat City when they were 2-1 victors in the FA Cup semi-final in April, and Wenger shares Guardiola's view that it is far too early in the season to make bold title predictions about the Premier League leaders, who have surged to the top of the table with nine wins and one draw.

City also qualified for the Champions League knockout stage with a 100 per cent record so far - with two games remaining - after winning 3-2 in Napoli on Wednesday night.

'So we are five points ahead. How many games left? How many points? Eight-four to play for, and five in front,' Guardiola added. 'If we play until next May like we have in the last two months, I'd say 'wow, we have a good chance', but who is going to show me we will not get injuries.

'It's hard to maintain even in the best team. Many circumstances, the opponents will make it tricky, and we have to solve it. May is the best month to talk about it, but with 84 points to play for?

'People say we are unbeatable, someone will beat us. How we react is how you become a good team.'
