Tottenham star Harry Kane can score goals in any league in the world... but they can't cash in on him like they did with Gareth Bale, says Juande Ramos

Former Tottenham and Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos says Harry Kane would be a success anywhere in the world, ahead of Wednesday's Wembley showdown between his two former clubs.

He also believes Tottenham would be fools to take their Spanish opponents lightly based on their recent poor form in La Liga.

Ramos, who is in the running to become the next manager of Chile as they rebuild after failing to reach the World Cup, told Sportsmail: ‘If you can score goals in England then you can score goals in any league. There is no doubting Kane’s quality.

‘He played well at the Bernabeu, they all did. It was a performance that really showed they were not afraid to take on Madrid in their own stadium.

'They probably deserved more than they got. Navas made various saves although Hugo Lloris also made a very good save from [Karim] Benzema.

‘And they did all that without a player like Delle Ali, who, although he is still young, you can see the huge potential there. They have a very good team and [Mauricio] Pochettino has done a magnificent job.’

But despite their positive showing at the Bernabeu, Ramos warned: ‘People can say Madrid have not been brilliant yet but they know how to pace themselves. They were brilliant in the last three or four months of the season.

‘Cristiano Ronaldo is the same. It’s very, early in the season but he will still end up with 30 or 40 goals. I have no doubts about that.’

Ramos remains the last coach to win a trophy with Tottenham and believes the drought has owed more to the club’s lack of ambition in the transfer market than anything the players or managers have failed to do.

‘The club has been like a very well run company,’ he said. ‘Whenever they produce a star player, they sell him. In terms of winning trophies, the ambition and the priorities have been elsewhere.’

Spurs’ Carabao Cup exit at the hands of West Ham last week means Pochettino will not be lifting the trophy next spring and in February it will be 10 years since Ramos’ side won the Carling Cup against Liverpool. It remains their one triumph in the last 26 years.

Asked if the attitude might be about to change, Ramos said: ‘We will see what happens with Kane but in the past the decision has been to sell. It happened with Luka Modric, with Gareth Bale, Dimitar Berbatov and with Robbie Keane. It’ s what they have done up until now.'
