Jurgen Klopp staunchly defended Dejan Lovren after his calamitous performance at Tottenham last week.

Lovren was hooked after 31 minutes at Wembley after a number of mistakes and could miss out against Huddersfield on Saturday.

Klopp - who heavily criticised the central defender last week - will decide on his starting XI later on Friday, although made it clear Lovren's stock at Melwood has not changed.

'I don't wish mistakes to be discussed in public. You have no idea how it feels,' Klopp said.

'I'm not the kind of person to stand around with a smart phone and not help. It wasn't the nicest week in Dejan's life but it is only football. I've much more positive things to think about with him than negative still.

'He's a Liverpool player and that's how I treat him, as a member of his family. At the end it's up to you what you make of stories like this, if you celebrate or not.

'He had a good training week and we will see what we'll do with the line up. It's not about the last game but Huddersfield.'

Simon Mignolet is also sweating on his place, while Klopp also revealed Liverpool had been spending extra time working on defending this week after shipping four against Spurs.

'We worked more of course because we had the time for it,' Klopp added. 'You have to react to things which happen in the last games.

'I cannot make the last game bigger than all the others but it didn't feel good. It wasn't enough because we have to show more in each department.'
