The clean sheet hoodoo continues...

The 2-1 scoreline at Vicarage Road continued Watford's woeful defensive record against the Gunners.

It means that Watford have now failed to keep a clean sheet against Arsenal in 11 matches.

The last time they managed to shut them out came in a 1-0 away victory in 1988.

'We hate Tottenham'

After a cagey opening 20 minutes with not much goal action anyone tuning into this Premier League clash needed a pick me up of some sort, and it didn't seem that that was going to come from on the pitch.

So with the eyes wandering and yawns setting in the Watford and Arsenal faithful united to provide a light-hearted moment the game was in desperate need of.

Both sets of fans sung harmoniously as choruses of 'we hate Tottenham' echoed around Vicarage Road.

The rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham is well documented and is one of the most fiercest of London derbies.

But the Watford and Tottenham rivalry, not so much. You could argue that geographically it is a derby, but certainly in the loosest term of the word.

Nevertheless, the proof is in the pudding and there must be some kind of ill feeling, from Watford's end at least.

Petr Cech hasn't saved a penalty for Arsenal

Since joining Arsenal from Chelsea Cech has been a shadow of his former self.

He is still a fine keeper but age seems to have caught up with him a little bit over the last few seasons.

His reflexes aren't what they once were and the fact he has never saved a penalty for Arsenal indicates that.

Though he was more renowned at Chelsea for single handily winning vital points than necessarily saving penalties, you would still get the feeling when someone stood up to take a spot kick against him they were probably going to miss.

But not now. Troy Deeney's equaliser from the spot was the 12th penalty Cech has faced in Arsenal colours and was the 12th he's conceded in Arsenal colours.

Cleverley > Ozil

Few would suggest former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley is a better player than Germany international Mesut Ozil.

But unfortunately for the latter the stats don't lie.

Cleverley's last-gasp winner means he now has a goal and an assist this season compared to Ozil, who is yet to register either.

Arsenal's blue away kit

Perhaps someone high up in the Arsenal pyramid saw Saturday's clash on TV as an opportunity to subtly remind people how lovely their away kit is?

Because for some strange reason they opted to wear the blue kit instead of their traditional red and white one against the yellow and black kit of Watford.

There would have been no clash of colour if they had have worn their home strip, like they did in their last Premier League away game against Chelsea, but still decided against it.

The only previous time they have worn the blue kit in the league was at Anfield against Liverpool which was to avoid a colour clash.

Per Mertesacker's Premier League duck is finally over

The big German centre back rose the highest to bullet home a header to open the scoring and give Arsenal a lead to take into the break.

With all the attacking quality on the pitch he would probably have been the last person anyone would expect to deliver the goods in front of goal and break the deadlock.

But for all its rarity, it also offered a lot of significance.

Not only was this Arsenal's first league away goal of the season - again, you would have got some odds on Mertesacker being the man to provide that moment, especially eight games in - but this was also his first Premier League goal in 1400 days.

It was the perfect way to mark his first league start for the Gunners in 18 months.

Arsenal's awful away run

Arsene Wenger's side continue to struggle away from home.

Saturday's loss was their third in four games away from the Emirates Stadium this season.

They did manage to break their goalscoring duck with Mertesacker scoring their first away goal in the league but they are still yet to taste victory on the road.
