'Liverpool will not win the title this season... is this now English football's impossible job?': Jamie Carragher voices concern over gap between Anfield side and Premier League rivals

  • Nine points already separates Liverpool and their two Manchester rivals
  • Jamie Carragher has ruled his former team out of the Premier League title race
  • He is not convinced the club's transfer strategy gives them a chance of glory

Jamie Carragher has ruled Liverpool out of this season's title race and questioned Jurgen Klopp's chances of ever returning the club to the top of English football.

Having finished fourth last term, the Reds currently lie seventh in the Premier League table with 12 points from their seven games, some nine behind Manchester United and Manchester City.

Carragher only sees the gap widening given the spending power at Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium and fears for his old club's chances over the coming years.

'Liverpool will not win the title this season. I am not convinced Jurgen Klopp will ever be able to bring it back to Anfield,' he wrote in the Telegraph.

'I am not sure when my old club will win it again. I certainly do not see it happening in the near future.

'Given the history and expectations at Anfield, has Liverpool become English football's impossible job?'

Carragher pointed to Liverpool's stagnation over the summer, after the ended the last campaign above United, as a major sign of concern.

'Last summer Liverpool and United were in a similar position; preparing for the Champions League, knowing to go up a level and be serious title contenders they had to make the right signings,' he wrote.

'United, in sixth, acted. Liverpool, in fourth, did not. This is a trend. It is typical of what happened when Brendan Rodgers and (under previous owners) Rafa Benítez and Gerard Houllier had their best sides.

'Houllier, Benítez and Rodgers were in a position where they needed one more step to give good teams an even better chance of winning the title. They could not do it. My fear is Klopp will be looking back at the summer as his opportunity spurned.'
