Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi takes cheeky dig at Diego Costa as he hails Fernando Torres before scoring late winner against Atletico Madrid

  • Batshuayi would have hoped to have established himself in Costa's absence
  • But the striker has taken his chances from the bench while Alvaro Morata stars

Michy Batshuayi had a night to remember as the Belgian striker emerged from the substitutes' bench to score a last-minute winner for Chelsea at the new home of Atletico Madrid

Batshuayi watched Alvaro Morata head in a deserved equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano, but the striker was in the right place to prod home the winner with the last kick of the match, sealing a 2-1 victory.

Prior to the match in the Spanish capital, the man who scored the decisive goal at West Brom to seal the Premier League title at The Hawthorns last May was pictured deep inside the bowels of the new stadium with two renowned forwards.

But while Diego Costa was the man on everyone's lips prior to kick-off, following the Spaniard's £56million move from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid this week, Batshuayi was keen to make more of a fuss about the man to his right.

Fernando Torres arrived at Chelsea with a reputation for scoring goals during his time at Liverpool, and previously at Atletico.

While he was unable to replicate the same level of potency at Stamford Bridge following his £50m switch, he has clearly still left a lasting impression on strikers breaking into the game.

Batshuayi posted a picture of him, Torres and Costa on his Instagram account, writing: 'Great honour to meet one of the great strikers I used to watch when I was younger... and no I'm not talking about Diego.'

The ensuing use of the hashtag 'Guess who stole his jersey tonight' reveals that the Blues match-winner agreed to swap shirts with former Chelsea forward Torres after the match.

Because of Atletico's transfer ban, Costa cannot play for the club until January despite completing his return on Tuesday - and he cut a dejected figure in the stands as Batshuayi directed Marcos Alonso's cross low beyond Jan Oblak after 94 minutes.

The Blues had fallen behind to a 40th-minute Antoine Griezmann penalty despite having the better of the first half when David Luiz inexplicably pulled the shirt of Lucas Hernandez at a set piece.

But Chelsea, who hit the post through Eden Hazard early on, again impressed after the break and were rewarded when Morata levelled with his fourth goal in five days.

Batshuayi's winner ended an 11-game unbeaten run at home in Europe for Atletico, who have reached two Champions League finals in the past four seasons.

Chelsea stay top of Group C on six points, two clear of Roma and five ahead of Atletico in third with Qarabag sitting bottom without a point.
