Brighton are facing a striker crisis after Tomer Hemed was charged with violent conduct for an alleged stamp on Newcastle's DeAndre Yedlin.

Hemed, who scored the match-winner on Sunday, landed his studs on the full-back's calf towards the end of Brighton's victory.

Referee Andrew Marriner did not see the incident during the game and so it was not included in his report filed with the Football Association on Monday.

The governing body were therefore able to apply retrospective action and it was reviewed by a three-man panel of former elite referees, who unanimously decided it was intentional.

Hemed, 30, has until 6pm Tuesday to respond to the charge. If he does not appeal the decision, he will be banned for three matches and will miss fixtures against Arsenal, Everton and West Ham as Brighton attempt to build on a strong start to the season. If he contests the charge it will go to an independent commission.

Hemed, who would have been allowed to leave the south coast club in the summer had manager Chris Hughton brought in one of his transfer targets, is Brighton's only fit out-and-out striker, with Glenn Murray and Sam Baldock currently out injured. Forward Izzy Brown, 20, on loan from Chelsea, could have the responsibility placed on him to lead the attack.

GRAHAM POLL'S VERDICT ON 'STAMP'

Andre Marriner appeared to miss the alleged stamp when Tomer Hemed clashed with DeAndre Yedlin.

There was contact on Yedlin's ankle but my first thought was Hemed tried to avoid his opponent.

The FA will look at it but the level of intent is hard to determine.

Chris Hughton backed his player and Rafa Benitez focused on the goal his team conceded, so my initial view that it was accidental would seem to be correct.

The FA said in a statement: 'Tomer Hemed has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

'The Brighton & Hove Albion player was involved in an incident with Newcastle United's DeAndre Yedlin in the 88th minute of the game on Sunday (September 24 2017). He has until 6pm on Tuesday [26 September 2017] to respond to the charge.

'Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite referees.

'Each referee panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence.

'For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous.'
