Brighton 1-0 Newcastle, Premier League RESULT: Tomer Hemed strikes to give hosts victory at AMEX Stadium

Up to 13th in fact and level on points with Arsenal who host West Bromwich Albion tomorrow.

Newcastle United meanwhile drop two places following defeat and now sit ninth in the standings.

90+3min: And that should be that. Brighton win the ball back to launch a counter only for Lascelles to make a professional foul and pick up a booking.

90+2min: All hands to the pump now for Newcastle who have gone long ball. EVERYONE back for Brighton.

89min: Incredibly there are a many Brighton supporters leaving already. How can you leave a football match at a time like this? Who are these people? Would you walk out of gripping film before the finale?

I mean there are only three minutes added on...

86min: Merino picks out an unmarked Shelvey on the left but his dangerous looking low cross is cut out for a corner. Nervous times for the hosts.

85min: It's no longer about getting a second goal for Brighton, it's about protecting what they have got. For the past 15 minutes Newcastle have been applying the pressure and the hosts do seem to be dropping deeper...

83min: A final change on the way for Newcastle as Chancel Mbemba departs and Jesus Gamez replaces him.

81min: Anthony Knockaert departs for the Seagulls with Jamie Murphy on in his place.

79min: Half-chance for the Toon, the ball bounces into Christian Atsu's path, but it's a little awkward and high, resulting in his volley towards the ground not generating enough power as Ryan collects, Brighton are preparing a first switch.

77min: Jonjo Shelvey stands over the free-kick... then whips it over the wall, over Ryan and over the crossbar. Back to square one for the Toon who have at least shown more attacking threat since the introduction of Gayle.

76min: CRUNCH! Ayoze Perez tries to break through 25 yards out only to be stopped in his tracks by a charging Duffy. No surprises to see the yellow card brought out by the referee.

73min: Nearly the most unlikeliest of equalisers from Jonjo Shelvey,whose corner kick catches Mat Ryan cold and clatters off the near post with the Brighton keeper scrambling back to try and save. I'm not certain the Seagulls stopper would have got to it had it been on target.

71min: And that is quickly followed by a second Newcastle United change as Dwight Gayle replaces the disappointing Joselu.

68min: A waste. Lewis Dunk carelessly gives the ball away but Ritchie can only drag low and wide from 25 yards.

Here comes Shelvey for the Toon as he replaces Isaac Hayden.

65min: That last attack seems to be the anomaly for Newcastle though who are back under Brighton pressure. Benitez has now shared some instructions with Jonjo Shelvey who could be coming on soon.

62min: Better from Newcastle! A Matt Ritchie free-kick hits the wall and falls for Mikel Merino, whose 25-yard strike deflects off Shane Duffy's head and just shy of Mat Ryan's top corner.

59min: Nearly a third of the way into this half and Newcastle are just about enduring their worst spell of the game. Still no sign of changes on the way though from the Toon.

56min: Nearly a second goal for Brighton! Bruno's low back post ball across goal is turned on target by Solly March on the slide but Rob Elliot makes a terrific stop to just about stop the ball from travelling over the line. Top keeping.

54min: That goal seems to have fired up Brighton who are now pushing for a second. Newcastle just haven't got going in this period. Rafael Benitez will be more than disappointed with his team.

51min: We have a GOAL! It's a cracking set-piece from the hosts as Pascal Gross's back post free-kick is headed back across goal by Dale Stephens for Tomer Hemed, who despite being surrounded by three Toon defenders lashes home from inside the six-yard box.

50min: Free-kick for Brighton as Tomer Hemed is fouled by Jamal Lascelles near the corner of the penalty box.

48min: Newcastle happy to sit back at the start of the second period. Rafael Benitez looks like he has his team to set up to counter attack.

Brighton, stumped for ways to break down the Toon, have so far pumped three long balls forward that have gone absolutely nowhere.

Just two touches for Joselu inside the Brighton box so far judging by the Newcastle forward's heat map - but at least one of them should have been a goal.

Otherwise there hasn't been too much to shout about in front of goal for either side. Here's to hoping for a second half improvement.

The effort is there, from both teams, the quality though is noticeably lacking.

An even contest at the AMEX Stadium and while I wouldn't go as far as this being a dead certain to finish 0-0. I will be surprised if just one goal doesn't decide it.

42min: Half-time is on the way and really it cannot come soon enough. This game is heading nowhere right now.

God, if you're up there, let someone score, please.

39min: Not much is your answer. Ritchie's strike is on target but his curling effort across goal lacks the essential power from that distance and Ryan takes a simple catch.

37min: Newcastle's passing has certainly improved since a sloppy opening 15 minutes, to the point that it's too much for Pascal Gross who is forced to bring down Matt Ritchie 30 yards from goal. What can the Toon make of this?

'Brighton are excellent at breaking at speed, transitioning the ball from their own half into the final third, but then they do not appear to know what to do with it around Newcastle’s penalty area. They’re lacking that killer final ball or cross.'

31min: Perez to his credit isn't shying away from the ball though, as he collects a short squared pass from Chancel Mbemba before his 16-yard snapshot under pressure just clears the crossbar.

30min: I'm quickly losing faith in this match as the quality on show continues to go down like an Olympic diver.

Ayoze Perez now gets into a good crossing position on the left only to boot the ball hopelessly out of play.

27min: Newcastle fail to clear the ball pumped into the box at the first attempt but as the Toon eventually scramble clear as a ball is headed back into the mixer.

25min: Newcastle have back into the game in the last few minutes, although play remains a little scrappy on the south coast. The hosts though win a free-kick just outside the box on the left flank

22min: What a miss! Newcastle launch a rare counter but despite horrific Brighton defending gifting the ball to Joselu following a cross, the Toon forward somehow rolls wide across goal from six yards out.

19min: Knockaert continues to look like Brighton's most creative player but even he is allowed a rare slip up as from the right and in a promising position to cross he badly slices his pass with the outside of his boot and out of play.

'Expansive, open game here at the Amex Stadium. Both sides look like scoring this afternoon, if the rest of the match maintains this intensity.'

13min: First booking of the game and it goes to Knockaert whose challenge on Christian Atsu looked more at home on a rugby pitch.

11min: Chance for Brighton! After Knockaert leaves Isaac Hayden trailing, an attack builds on the left before the ball finds Pascal Gross at the far post. His goal bound strike though is blocked behind.

10min: After a shaky start Brighton are taking control of this game. Newcastle looking poor in possession thus far.

7min: And now a counter attack from the hosts Anthony Knockaert breaks through the centre before laying the ball off to Tomer Hemed and continuing his run down the flank.

Hemed ignores him though and instead fires an ambitious low 25-yard drive towards the near post that lacks the power to trouble Rob Elliot.

6min: Good response from Brighton, as a cross into the Toon box leads to a goalmouth scramble that ends when a defender clears just in front of Dale Stephens who was looking to prod home.

3min: Top save from Mat Ryan, who sees a 20-yard Mikel Merino drive late towards his near post before reaching at full stretch to tip the ball away to safety.

Chris Hughton: 'Our level of performance has been good, we should've got more out of the Bournemouth game, but I've been pleased with the overall level of performance.

'We were able to score three goals against a very organised West Brom team, we know we're not going to be as prolific as last season, but it's not just about the centre forward it's about getting goals from other areas.

Rafa Benitez: 'We play one game a week, so normally when were involved in the Championship, you have two or three games to recover. But this way, it is easier to repeat, and the fact we're winning makes it even easier.

‘We have good communication with the fans, and we're going well but we have to keep our feet on the floor and keep going the same way.

They greet each other with a hug. It has been six months since they last met but the bond between Chris Hughton and Glenn Hoddle, who first met as schoolboys at Tottenham 45 years ago, is unbreakable.

Hughton gets his banter in early, complaining that Hoddle is 10 minutes late. Hoddle recalls that would have been a £10 fine back in the day. ‘£100 nowadays,’ Hughton replies with mock severity.
