Here is the lowdown on the 20-year-old who will be hoping to add to his two Premier League appearances made back in May...
Manchester United's Scott McTominay made his first appearance of the season against Burton
NAME: Scott McTominay

POSITION: Central midfield

WHAT HAS HE GOT?
It must be a daunting task trying to progress from United’s Under 23 squad to first-team level but McTominay looks to have a real chance.
This English midfielder of Scottish descent is a big presence in every way, dominating the midfield as he seeks a regular game under Jose Mourinho.
Tall, long striding with impressive body strength, it was difficult to fault him in a recent match. In the first half of the game I saw, the opposition overloaded the midfield third and Scott and his partner were made to look second best.

But after the break, he forced the issue, got tighter and started shielding, twisting and turning to shake off challenges, leading his team’s fightback.
He looked a blond, powerful presence. Up and back, neither holding nor playing off the front, he alternated with his partner in a rather old-school fashion as each covered for the other.
He has strength in the air, a good passing range and, as a clear all-rounder, likes to tackle and has energy. This is vital for a player in this position, particularly in a two-man central midfield.
The midfielder will hope for more first-team chances under the guidance of Jose Mourinho
WHAT DOES HE NEED?
It may be that McTominay lacks a little pace or acceleration to get away from his marker but this is outweighed by his power and drive. Attitude is not a problem, although he is not going to escape a yellow card for mistimed challenges such as the one I saw.
Overall, he looks a future captain if he can make the important step forward. Since the Class of ’92, United have not often promoted from within. He could buck that trend.
