Manchester United 4-0 Everton, Premier League RESULT: Relive the action as Romelu Lukaku scores against former club

  • Manchester United welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon
  • United are unbeaten in the Premier League and are displaying some fine form
  • Everton have struggled so far this season, winning just one of their four games
  • Wayne Rooney returns to Old Trafford for the first time since leaving this summer
  • Man Utd XI: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Young, Matic, Fellaini, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rashford, Lukaku
  • Everton XI: Pickford, Jagielka, Keane, Williams, Martina, Gueye, Schneiderlin, Davies, Sigurdsson, Baines, Rooney

Manchester United welcome Everton and their club's record goalscorer Wayne Rooney to Old Trafford with the Blues in desperate need of a positive result.

Rooney surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton's record in January before returning to his boyhood club this summer — now he will play against his former team-mates for the first time.

And Ronald Koeman will hope the striker wreaks havoc on his old stomping ground, with his side struggling near the foot of the table.

That's a wrap!

Thank you very much for joining today. It was nice to see some goals at the end there. United hardly rampant today, don't let the scoreline fool you. But boy does a 4-0 scoreline make you look bulletproof.

Everton fell apart and that result really does reflect where these two sides are at right now.

It is very rare that Wayne Rooney came away with nothing from Old Trafford. Financially, professionally, it is fair to say he did well there.

Today, he had to be content with the warmth of the reception on his return. If Rooney got what he deserved from this game as a Manchester United legend, as an Evertonian, he arguably did not.

His team were sunk by a wonderful goal from Antonio Valencia, and then a catastrophic three late on from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial from the penalty spot which plunged them into the bottom three.

Ironically, they were chasing the draw at the moment the roof began to cave in with seven minutes remaining, and it could be argued at the time that Everton had enough chances to merit it. Unfortunately, they lack the firepower to deliver and it told.

This summer, they sold their best goalscoring asset to Manchester United in Lukaku and bought a forward who could no longer make United’s best team in Rooney. He was a furiously hard worker yesterday, and contributed as much as anyone to Everton’s spirited challenge.

Sadly, he no longer has the pace that truly unnerves the best defenders, and neither do Everton upfront. If they had a fault against United it was that they had no-one capable of hitting top gear.

Everton broke through a couple of times, through Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson, but David De Gea was equal to it, on both attempts. When United did finally start to put the game away after 83 minutes, it was the pace of the counter-attack that did it.

Rooney was off by then, replaced by Kevin Mirallas. It was 1-0 when he was withdrawn, 4-0 by the time referee Andre Marriner blew his whistle. Maybe that was for the best. To be fair, he didn’t deserve to be on the end of this.

Everton into the relegation zone

They didn't deserve to get tonked today Everton but they've slipped into the relegation zone after conceding those late goals.

It's been a week to forget for the Toffees, their aggregate score is 0-10 from three games. Much to ponder for Ronald Koeman as they prepare to host Bournemouth at Goodison Park next Saturday, a real six-pointer in September down at the bottom of the table.

17:54
United go joint top

Wow, where did that come from? Everton were well in this game about 10 minutes ago. They've been thrashed 4-0 here.

Valencia with the early opener, added to late on by Mkhitaryan, Lukaku and Martial.

United go joint top, second to City only on alphabetical order. They have exactly the same record after five games.

17:50
FULL-TIME: Manchester United 4-0 Everton
17:49
GOAL! Manchester United 4-0 Everton

Martial makes no mistake, calmly slots the ball down the middle of the goal as Pickford went to save it. Everton have completely collapsed.

17:48
UNITED PENALTY

Handball from Schneiderlin as Martial ran through on goal. Oh dear Everton.

17:48
De Gea saves from Sandro

90 mins: David De Gea gets a hand to a rasping drive from Sandro to keep the Everton man out.

17:46
GOAL! Manchester United 3-0 Everton

LUKAKU! The Belgian pounces at the far post and boy did he enjoy that. He cups his ear to the Everton fans and pumps his fist. Blimey. No love lost there, then.

17:45
Danger man
17:44
SUB: Mkhitaryan OFF, Martial ON
17:43
Three points staying with United

Everton probably get what they deserve for the chances they've missed. United haven't been great but have been effective. Scored a worldie, then punished a defensive error. The difference.

17:40
GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Everton

Henrikh Mkhitaryan makes sure of the points. Ashley Williams gives the ball away, Fellaini finds Lukaku who does so well to pause, feed Mkhitaryan in space and he calmly slots past Pickford to double United's lead.

17:39
SUB: Rooney OFF, Mirallas ON

Big reception and 'Rooney' shouts as the former United captain comes off to be replaced by Mirallas.

17:39
YELLOW CARD: Bailly

Bailly brings down Calvert-Lewin and that's a booking.

17:35
No Penalty

78 mins: Shouts for a penalty as Lingard trips just as he gets a shot away inside the area. He was too honest there perhaps, looked like he had been caught.

17:33
SUB: Gueye OFF, Calvert-Lewin ON
17:33
SUB: Mata OFF, Herrera ON
17:32
Matic shoots wide

76 mins: Matic tries his luck from 20 yards but drills his effort wide of Pickford and the far post.

17:31
Lingard shoots over again

75 mins: Lingard seeing a lot of the ball since coming on and he wins a corner as his effort is deflected over.

17:30
Everton lacking cutting edge

73 mins: Everton having good moments, getting themselves into positions where they can create opportunities without actually creating them.

Lingard breaks down the left-hand side and wins a free-kick after a stupid challenge from Martina. Williams clears from underneath Pickford.

17:27
Lingard shoots over

70 mins: Ashley Young does well to get to the byline, he cuts back to Jesse Lingard who balloons it over the bar.

17:22
SUB: Davies OFF, Sandro ON
17:21
Mata hits the post!

65 mins: Left-footed curler from Mata, around the wall, cannons off the post. Everton clear behind and Jagielka deals with the corner.

17:20
YELLOW CARD: Williams

64 mins: Real mess from Pickford who gives the ball straight to Juan Mata who is then pushed over by Ashley Williams as he bore down on the box. Lucky escape for Everton...

17:19
De Gea saves from Sigurdsson

62 mins: Sigurdsson should score! The ball breaks to him on the edge of the area, he muscles inside and stabs a shot at goal that de Gea parries. United can't get going but Everton are wasting some big chances here.

17:18
SUB: Rashford OFF, Lingard ON

Defensive reinforcement this from Mourinho? Lingard will hold a shape that Rashford hasn't provide more help for Young on the left.

17:15
Everton the better side

59 mins: United have slowed down in this second-half. The energy that you could see in the opening quarter of the game hasn't really returned. Everton getting on top and look like they could draw level here.

17:11
Lukaku miscontrols in the area

54 mins: Lukaku found in the area after Jagielka completely misjudged a cross but the Belgian can't quite get the ball under control, it bounces high and away from him.

17:08
Rashford shoots wide

52 mins: Everton very much the better side since the break. United yet to settle down. Rashford sends a speculative effort wide of goal.

17:07
Rooney played in again

50 mins: Rooney again in the thick of the action. Davies does well to get the ball under control in the middle and thread it through. He jinks past Bailly but Rooney can't quite work enough room and the defender eventually gets it clear.

17:04
De Gea saves from Rooney

46 mins: That's a smart save from de Gea but Rooney should do better there, it's straight at the United 'keeper. He does so well to win the ball inside the area from Bailly after initially miscontrolling from Davies' pass and get the shot off. Intent from Everton right at the start of the second period.

17:02
Back underway!
16:57
Shot-shy Blues
16:49
Story of the first-half
16:46
HALF-TIME: Man United 1-0 Everton
16:43
United in control

44 mins: As we draw to the close of this half it's more and more United. Everton dropping deep again and United beginning to dominate ball and territory. They're not playing badly, the hosts, but hard to say they're playing well.

16:38
Lukaku denied

38 mins: Lukaku denied again, this time Jagielka it is who just slides in as he looks to clip the ball beyond Pickford. United broke well with Rashford slipping his strike partner in.

16:36
Action shots
16:35
Martina in the game

35 mins: Martina really is seeing a lot more of the ball and that's how Everton have brought themselves back into this game. Ashley Young having a decent time of it out there but he's being really tested out there.

Rashford races down the left, but he's surrounded by three players and it comes to nothing.

16:29
Davies offside

29 mins: Cuco Martina probably Everton's best player so far. Lovely cross into the penalty area where Tom Davies' header is well kept out by De Gea but the offside flag had gone up.

16:26
WHAT A MISS

26 mins: Wow. You have to score there. Michael Keane with a terrible pass to Schneiderlin, allows Lukaku through on goal and he clips the ball wide of Pickford. Blimey.

Big let off for Everton, just as they looked to be getting on terms here. Real hospital pass from Keane.

16:24
Williams leaves one in on Lukaku

24 mins: Lukaku is brought down by Ashley Williams, who was just a bit too slow for it there. Leaves one in on his former team-mate.

Mkhitaryan and Mata stand over the dead-ball, some 35 yards from goal. It's headed away and United are forced back.

16:21
Spreading the goals out
16:21
Rooney shoots wide

21 mins: United dominating less and less here. Certainly not penning Everton around their own 18-yard box as they had been doing. Rooney and Davies looking to combine for the visitors, but it's quite slow so far.

United though, have pace on the break. And as they allow Everton to creep forward they hit through Lukaku but his cross is too much for Rashford.

Cuco Martina is released down the right by Rooney, and the former United man drags his shot wide from the edge of the area when he receives the ball back.

16:15
Better from Everton

15 mins: Everton seeing a bit more of the ball now but they're still sitting deep. Morgan Schneiderlin wins a free-kick midway through the United half and this is an opportunity to create something.

Sigurdsson with it, Rooney fouls de Gea as he looks to collect Matic's header.

16:11
Everton sitting deep

12 mins: It's not quite all United, but I've barely seen anything from Everton yet. They've yet to really get out of their own half or up the pitch. Could be a really long afternoon this.

16:08
STRIKER
16:04
GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Everton

It was sunny at kick-off, within three minutes there's been an absolute downpour! Really rodding down, no idea what's going on with this weather. And I can hear a plane flying overhead I'm sure...

GOAL! Antonio Valencia has absolutely blammed the ball into the back of the net. It came out to him on the edge of the area from Matic, and he just wellied it beyond Jordan Pickford. Four minutes gone.

16:00
And they're off!
15:56
Players are out

Here we go!

15:55
The managers

Ronald Koeman on 3-4-3: ‘First of all we know how to play the system. We had a good game and a good result away to City.

‘We used it several times last season and we know it well.’

Jose Mourinho: ‘It’s the new Premier League. Lots of teams play with five at the back. So we know that. We know we are going to play against five defenders and many midfielders. But they have quality, so they will be a threat.’

Rooney on his Old Trafford return

Yes of course it was nice but I’m here today with Everton to try to get a good result for us.

I’m sure it’ll be strange but I’m here with Everton to try to get a result. I’m an Everton player and all my thoughts are on trying to help us get something out of the game.

When I was at United going back to Goodison it was the same, so it’s a game of football and for 90 minutes on the pitch everything will be going in to trying to get a result for us.

One match down, one to go

It's finished all square in the first Super Sunday clash, with Arsenal holding Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz was sent off for a wild lunge late on, but the hosts held on.

Hopefully we'll see more goals in this one.

There is another reunion today

Rooney isn't the only player coming up against the club he left in the summer.

Romelu Lukaku left Goodison Park during the transfer window and has joined a fruitful start to life in red.

And Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness believes he can go on to emulate one of the Premier League's greatest ever goalscorers - Didier Drogba.

14:46
A new addition to the Everton team...

There'll be a new name on the Everton shirts today, as they prepare to show off their new sleeve sponsor for the first time...

14:45
Rooney's Return

There is only one place to start this afternoon, and that is the return of Wayne Rooney to the place where he made his name.

The former England international has been described by Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho as a legend this week, and he's expected to receive a warm welcome from the Old Trafford faithful.

However, the club are keen to play down the return, especially given what happened last time they afforded a heroes return to one of their former stars...

14:35
Welcome!

Good afternoon and welcome to live coverage of Everton's visit to Manchester United in today's late kick off.

All eyes will be on Wayne Rooney as he makes his return to Old Trafford following his summer switch, and you can follow all the action here.
