Tottenham's Harry Kane emulated Wayne Rooney's feat in Champions League and Heung-min Son just can't stop scoring against Borussia Dortmund - FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED

  • Kane is first Englishman since Rooney to score in three successive CL games
  • Son scored his seventh goal against the German side in nine competitive games
  • Dortmund keeper Roman Burki was twice beaten at his near post in the first half

Harry Kane lifted Tottenham's Wembley curse by scoring twice and firing his side to an opening Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.

Son Heung-min's early strike was quickly cancelled out by a stunning effort from Dortmund's Andriy Yarmolenko but from there this match belonged to the unstoppable Kane. He restored Spurs' lead by capping a barnstorming run with an emphatic near-post finish before a cute shot in the second half secured a 3-1 victory.

Sportsmail's SAMI MOKBEL was on hand to consider what we learned from Tottenham's victory in the Champions League.

1 - Harry Kane spoke on Tuesday about the value of consistently scoring in the Champions League in his bid to be recognised as a truly world-class centre forward.

His two goals here mean he has now scored in three straight Champions League games.  The last Englishman to do that? A certain Wayne Rooney way back in 2010.

2 - It's never nice being beaten at the near post when you're a goalkeeper. So spare a thought for Borussia Dortmund's Swiss shot-stopper Roman Burki.

After seeing Son Heung-min's near-post effort fly past him in the fourth minute, he suffered the same ignominy 11 minutes later when Harry Kane beat him with a near identical effort.

Can't imagine his team-mates were too impressed.

3 - Penny for Kieran Trippier's thoughts.

Kyle Walker's departure to Manchester City in the summer was meant to see the former Burnley man take the mantle of Tottenham's first choice right back.

But he was on the bench for the start to Spurs' Champions League campaign, Serge Aurier making his debut at Wembley.

4 - Borussia Dortmund must be sick of the sight of Son. His goal was his seventh against the Bundesliga outfit in nine competitive games.

The Korean, of course, used to ply his trade in Germany's top league, playing for Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen.

And last night Dortmund were wishing he was anywhere else but Wembley.

5 - One of the biggest rounds of applause came for former Tottenham defender Gary Mabbutt.

The ex-Spurs skipper was introduced onto the pitch at half-time to a hero's welcome from the Tottenham faithful.

Mabbutt, now 56, has recently undergone major heart surgery. But not that you'd know it by looking at him. Fit as a fiddle.
