Roy Hodgson posed for pictures from the front seat of his car after arriving at Crystal Palace's training ground to complete formalities ahead of his appointment as the club's new manager.

The former England boss, 70, has replaced failed summer appointment, Ronald de Boer, after the Dutchman lasted just 77 days in the hotseat at Selhurst Park.

Sportsmail understands Hodgson has agreed a two-year deal to make his return to management after his departure from the Three Lions.

The former England boss told reporters that his appointment at Selhust Park is 'close'

Speaking to reporters outside of the club's Beckenham facility, Hodgson said: 'It's a great opportunity for me to return to the game at the highest level and also at a club that I've always admired and liked and supported as well so it's a good day for me, I'm very happy.

'I'm looking forward now to getting down to some work and trying to help us get some more points in the league and climb up the table.'

Hodgson confirmed Sportsmail's story that he would be taking his first training session on Wednesday.

'I'm very pleased to be working at the highest level at a good football club and I'm hoping now that I'll be able to do a good job here,' he added.

'I've always got sympathy for managers who lose their job, but it's a fact of life, and it's not my business, it's the business of the club.

'I'm pleased that they've turned to me and allowed me to take the job on, but of course I've got sympathy for any manager who loses his job, but there's nothing more I can say.'

Hodgson returns to football after leaving his position as England manager after Euro 2016

Sportsmail reported on Sunday night how the Eagles had stepped up their search for De Boer's replacement, with former England manager Hodgson and Sam Allardyce the two leading candidates. They have moved quickly to secure the services of Hodgson.

He returns to the Premier League for the first time since leaving West Brom for the national team in 2012, having previously managed Liverpool, Fulham and Blackburn in the English top flight.

He has been out of work since England's disastrous Euro 2016 campaign, which ended with a humiliating exit to Iceland, but the Croydon native now takes charge of a club he played for at youth level in the 1960s.
