Manager Antonio Conte has been frustrated during much of the summer transfer window, most recently losing out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool having already been beaten to Romelu Lukaku by Manchester United.
Tottenham's offer for Swansea striker Fernando Llorente could also see Conte beaten to the Spaniard by their London rivals, but the Premier League champions have now set their sights on Zappacosta.
New Manchester City right-back Danilo also revealed, following his move to the Etihad, that he rejected Chelsea in order to link up with Pep Guardiola, while Conte also admitted he was interested in Kyle Walker prior to his move to City.
Zappacosta has four full Italy caps and has been at Torino for two seasons, having previously played for Atalanta.
