Manchester City 1-1 Everton PLAYER RATINGS: Captain Phil Jagielka was a defensive rock but new £35m keeper Ederson could have done better

  • City goalkeeper Ederson (5.5) could have done better for the Everton goal
  • Leroy Sane (5.5) and Gabriel Jesus (5) fail to fire and both were substituted
  • Jagielka (8) stood firm against City's potent strikeforce on Monday night

Raheem Sterling's 82nd-minute equaliser saved 10-man Manchester City from defeat as they drew at home after Wayne Rooney had put the visitors ahead.

Rooney's second goal in as many games this season was his 200th in the Premier League, making him just the second player after former England forward Alan Shearer to reach that milestone.

The 31-year-old, who rejoined his boyhood club from Manchester United last month, side-footed through the legs of City keeper Ederson in the 35th minute after good work from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

MAN CITY (3-3-2-2)

EDERSON 5.5 – City’s new keeper could have done better for the goal as Rooney’s effort ricocheted between his legs before going in.

VINCENT KOMPANY 7 – Looks back to his best. Read the game so well, though booked for clumsy foul on Calvert-Lewin.

JOHN STONES 6 – Played at the heart of a back-three and looked solid enough as City gave up very few chances.

NICOLAS OTAMENDI 6.5 – Strong at the back and even forced Pickford into a couple of saves as he got forward.

KYLE WALKER 5.5 – Can consider himself unlucky to pick up both his bookings for challenges on Baines and Calvert-Lewin that led to a red before half-time.

FERNANDINHO 6 – Over committed himself with a lunging tackle in the build-up to the goal as he was tricked by Calvert-Lewin.

LEROY SANE 5.5 – Danger of playing him as a wing-back exposes when he gave the ball away trying to pass to Kompany in build-up to Rooney’s goal.

DAVID SILVA 6.5 – Hit the post from an exquisite pass by Aguero when he should have scored, but also provided some good approach play of his own.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE 6.5 – Some bright moments from the Belgian but we know he is capable of producing much more than this.

GABRIEL JESUS 5 – Did little apart from aim two first-half shots straight at Pickford and was replaced by Sterling at the interval. Disappointing.

SERGIO AGUERO 6 – Took the wrong option on several occasions when he had a clear sight of goal. Very unlike the Argentine to do that.

Subs: Bravo, Danilo (for Stones 65, 7), Sterling (for Gabriel Jesus 46, 7), Mangala, B Silva (for Sane 69, 6.5), Toure, Foden.

Sent off: Walker

Booked: Walker, Kompany

Manager: Pep Guardiola 6 – Did well to avoid defeat after going a goal, and a man, down.

EVERTON (3-4-1-2)

JORDAN PICKFORD 7 – Looks a great addition for Everton. Fantastic late save from Danilo but had little chance with goal.

LEIGHTON BAINES 7 – Made the best tackle of the match, sliding in to touch the ball off Walker’s toe on the edge of the box.

MICHAEL KEANE 6.5 – Outfoxed by David Silva early on but recovered to play his part in a magnificent defensive effort.

ASHLEY WILLIAMS 6.5 – Another defensive rock for Everton on a night when they did well to hold out for so long.

PHIL JAGIELKA 8 – Recovered from a slip to deny Aguero an almost certain goal. Highlight of an outstanding performance from the skipper.

MASON HOLGATE 6 – Dispossessed Sane and started the move that led to Everton’s goal, but weak header led to equaliser.

MORAN SCHNEIDERLIN 5 – Silly challenge on Aguero having already been booked for chopping down the Argentine early on.

IDRISSA GUEYE 6 – Strong midfield presence helped keep City at bay until nine minutes from time.

Everton's young forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a constant thorn in the defence

TOM DAVIES 6 – Drilled the ball wide from good position early on and unlucky to be booked for dive as he took on Otamendi.

WAYNE ROONEY 7 – What a place to get his 200th Premier League goal. Still has a great eye for goal.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN 7 – Led the line well and set up several chances including Rooney’s first-half goal.

Subs: Stekelenburg, Mirallas, Martina, Sigurdsson (for Davies 61, 6), Klaassen (for Williams 61, 6), Besic (for Rooney 90), Lookman.

Scorer: Rooney 35

Sent off: Schneniderlin

Booked: Schneiderlin, Davies, Rooney

Manager: Ronald Koeman 7 – Set up his team to soak up the pressure and break. So nearly earned him a win.

Referee: Robert Madley 4.5 – Questions will be asked of both yellow cards for Kyle Walker. Very harsh sending-off.

Star man: Phil Jagielka
