  • Sportsmail evaluates the summer business of the Premier League's big six
  • Top clubs may yet spend significant money in the final two weeks of the window
  • Arsenal and Liverpool cling to their biggest talents as the deadline approaches
  • Chelsea need reinforcements in every position and could spend over £100m
  • The Manchester clubs have shown the other teams how its done this summer
  • Conte leading the sack race - but can he upset the odds against Tottenham?

This time in two weeks, the transfer window will be shut and, for better or for worse, clubs will be stuck with their squads until it reopens in January.

Despite having the whole summer to complete their business, the last few days of the window are notoriously busy in the Premier League and this year is set to be no different.

Even among the big six, where the money flows freely, gaps in teams still remain.

Here, Sportsmail provides a complete rundown of the summer so far and what could yet happen at the top clubs between now and August 31.

Arsenal

The story so far

Arsene Wenger worked fast this summer, taking advantage of Atletico Madrid's transfer ban to agree a club-record deal for long-term target Alexandre Lacazette, who had been set to move to the Spanish side.

A deal for Schalke defender Sead Kolasinac was agreed quietly while fans were still protesting about Wenger's future and the Bosnian looks like he could be the signing of the summer in what has been a crazy transfer market.

What do they still need?

In exact opposition to Chelsea, Arsenal simply need to trim down their squad. They have 33 senior players on their wage bill and it is clear Wenger doesn't see a future for all of them.

Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Calum Chambers, Carl Jenkinson and Lucas Perez among others have all been told they can leave but few clubs appear willing to match what are now considered bloated wage demands.

Keeping Alexis Sanchez at the club will feel like a new signing for Arsenal fans

Who are their top targets?

A deal for Monaco star Thomas Lemar has been put on the back-burner but is sure to fire up again should Alexis Sanchez leave.

Other than that, the focus at the Emirates is wholly on keeping their best players, such as Sanchez, past August 31. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mesut Ozil are also in the final year of their contracts and should two out of the three leave, a big arrival will be essential to appease an already short-tempered fan base.

Chelsea

The story so far

Where to begin? It all looked so positive after Tiemoue Bakayoko joined from Monaco, swiftly followed by the arrival of Anthonio Rudiger and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.

But a number of high-profile departures as well as the traditional spate of loan exits has left Antonio Conte with a squad short in almost every position.

Nemanja Matic joined Manchester United in what looks increasingly like a bizarre decision while senior squad players like Kurt Zouma have been forced to seek first-team opportunities elsewhere in the division. All the while Diego Costa refuses to return after a fallout with Conte.

It reeks of mismanagement but there is still money to spend and the next two weeks could see over £100m invested.

What do they still need?

Conte would probably consider a player in any position right now. His keenness to strengthen his wing-back options has been clear with an upgrade needed on Victor Moses.

Bakayoko is likely to fill in for Matic but challenging on four fronts means Chelsea need an experienced player who is willing to play second fiddle to the Frenchman.

Another centre-back would also be wise, especially following Gary Cahill's sending off in the opening day defeat by Burnley. Currently, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta are the only other defenders in the squad with adequate Premier League experience.

Controversy surrounding Diego Costa is making a difficult summer even tougher at Chelsea

Who are their top targets?

There will be a big push for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has under a year left on his contract at Arsenal, although Wenger will be very reluctant to sell to a Premier League title rival.

Danny Drinkwater fits the profile in midfield but Leicester value the England international as highly as Chelsea did Matic and are demanding similar money to the £40m they sold the Serb for.

Alex Sandro of Juventus has been on Conte's wishlist all summer and his arrival would go a long way to patching up the bad blood between him and the club. However, Juventus are chasing Champions League glory and aren't in the business of selling their best players.

Liverpool

The story so far

Mohamed Salah appears to have completed Jurgen Klopp's perfect forward line with the Egyptian already combining with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to devastating effect.

Dominic Solanke's arrival from Chelsea will be the signing of the century if he can fulfill his potential while left-back Andrew Robertson provides an alternative to the erratic Alberto Moreno.

What do they still need?

A centre-back has alluded them all summer and every club in Europe now knows it.

They face paying a monumental premium for whoever they decide to sign if, that is, they manage to sign anyone in the next two weeks.

Losing Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona would force Klopp into looking for a significant replacement but the German is putting everything in to keeping his playmaker.

Who are their top targets?

Look no further than Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool could have had a £50m deal done in early July had it not been for an alleged tapping-up storm. Almost two months on, they face the prospect of paying upwards of £70m.

Manchester City

The story so far

Manchester City's £220m spending spree is the largest in Europe. Pep Guardiola has dug deep into the United Arab Emirates' oil fortune to sign five significant players.

In Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker and Danilo, he now has the wing-back talent he longed for last season and now looks set to implement an all-out assault on the Premier League title.

Moves for goalkeeper Ederson and Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva also added strength to areas of relative weakness to leave them with arguably the most complete squad in the league.

What do they still need?

It is less a case of need and more one of want.

They already have six centre-backs but one with Premier League experience would further guard Guardiola against injury, something of importance when one of your top stars is the injury-prone Vincent Kompany.

Kyle Walker was expensive at £50m but no one at City will complain if he helps deliver the title

Who are their top targets?

Despite an attack that stands as the envy of world football, Guardiola is still chasing a late deal for Arsenal's Sanchez, a signing that would almost certainly win them the title.

However, it would also be the end of Wenger at Arsenal as far as the fans are concerned so such a deal remains even less likely that for Kylian bappe, who has also been considered.

Jonny Evans has emerged as a shock target this week and his vast experience may turn out to be vital should injuries strike their international stars.

Manchester United

The story so far

Despite allowing Romelu Lukaku to leave Chelsea amid rumours of a breakdown in their relationship, Jose Mourinho pulled it out of the bag to sign the striker from under the nose of his former club.

Matic's arrival was another significant blow to the Blues with Manchester United now boasting two vastly experienced Premier League stars who could have been playing at Stamford Bridge this season.

Fine margins may end up bringing huge gains for Mourinho, who also strengthened his already strong defence with Victor Lindelof.

What do they still need?

Mourinho has been anchoring to strengthen his left wing for most of the summer with doubts remaining over Luke Shaw and Ashley Young.

An intake of three players would be the lowest for United since 2013 but would not leave United desperately short with both Shaw and Young set to return from respective injury problems.

Who are their top targets?

Ivan Perisic has been on the cards for much of the summer but talks between United and Inter Milan have not progressed in almost a month.

Danny Rose of Tottenham has alerted Old Trafford officials following his comments about wages but it would take a brave negotiator to enter battle with Daniel Levy at this late stage in the window.

Tottenham

The story so far

Tottenham fans do not need reminding of their lack of transfer business, but while Mauricio Pochettino claims to be happy just to keep his squad together, the reality is that the move to their new stadium has hit them hard.

Inflated transfer fees has rendered last season's second-placed club unable to compete in the market while they have also been forced to sell a significant star to a rival in Walker.

What do they still need?

A centre back appears to be an absolute must as they head into a difficult campaign with the unfamiliar Wembley as their home. They currently have just four senior centre-backs and serious doubts remain over Kevin Wimmer.

A striker seems out of the question at this late stage but Victor Janssen has failed his audition as Harry Kane's understudy thus far. An injury to their top scorer, coupled with a lengthy lay-off at the back, and things could get ugly very quickly.

Who are their top targets?

Davison Sanchez is keen on a move to north London but Levy is pushing Ajax hard over the transfer fee and risks missing out on one of game's quickest and most exciting centre backs.

A deal for Ross Barkley has been mooted all summer but looks dead for now after the Everton midfielder suffered a hamstring injury. They are likely to come back in time for the January window.
