Manchester United flop Guillermo Varela returns to former side Penarol after difficult four-year spell

  • Guillermo Varela was David Moyes's first signing as Manchester United boss
  • But he struggled for appearances, playing a grand total of 11 appearances
  • Varela missed out on a move to Eintracht Frankfurt after getting a tattoo

Manchester United full-back Guillermo Varela has been sold to his former side Penarol.

The 24-year-old was David Moyes's first signing as United manager but struggled for appearances throughout his spell at Old Trafford, playing most frequently under Louis van Gaal.

He featured in a grand total of 11 games and also spent time on loan with Real Madrid's Castilla and Eintracht Frankfurt.

A potential long-term move to Frankfurt fell apart after he got a tattoo without the club's permission prior to their German Cup final.

United's official Twitter account posted a message reading: .@Guille_Varela4 has left #MUFC to rejoin Penarol. All the best for the future, Guillermo!'

Varela was hopeful of a move throughout the summer and a source close to him told the Manchester Evening News earlier this month that he wanted 'personal tranquility'.

They continued: 'The player decided it after how badly he was treated in Frankfurt. His experience in Europe was not good. In 2017-18, Guillermo would have been making only Ā£4,000 per week.'
