Tottenham prep Davinson Sanchez bid

ROB DRAPER AND SIMON JONES: Tottenham are preparing a £35million bid for Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

The 21-year-old Colombian was an outstanding performer for the Dutch club last season and has attracted interest from Inter Milan and Barcelona also.

Mauricio Pochettino and his scouting staff have identified 6ft 2ins Sanchez as a player who can fit into their system at centre-back or defensive midfield.

But Ajax have offered Sanchez a huge new deal worth £54,000 a week to stave off Tottenham’s interest in the Colombian centre half.

Zinedine Zidane discusses his new contract

Zinedine Zidane said he is happy to sign a new contract at Real Madrid but admitted he knows only results on the pitch will guarantee he actually sees it out.
The Frenchman confirmed on Saturday that he has agreed a new three-year deal with the Spanish and European champions, though he has seen up close the speed with which Madrid dispense with coaches who do not deliver.
'My story with Real Madrid is deeper than contracts and signatures,' Zidane said in a press conference ahead of Sunday's Spanish Super Cup clash against Barcelona.

SIMON JONES: Leeds United have moved to sign Hamburg striker target Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

Spurs prepare bid for Davinson Sanchez... but Ajax offer him new deal

But Ajax have offered Sanchez a huge new deal worth £54,000 a week to stave off interest in the Colombian centre half.

Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars is quoted in respected Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf saying: ‘We have made a top offer to Davinson for a new contract.’

It is understood that the 21-year-old Tottenham target will now double his wages at Ajax to €60,000 a week – around £54,000 a week – which is comparable to what Spurs pay their defenders.

And Ajax, who previously have said they would not sell for less than £35m, have now reassessed that figure in the inflationary wake of Neymar’s £198 deal and left back Benjamin Mendy’s £51.75m move to Manchester City. The Dutch club plan to keep him for one more year and expect to receive more than £60m for him next summer, with Barcelona among the clubs monitoring him.

The determination of Ajax to keep Sanchez for one more season is a blow to Spurs and certainly they would have to bid well over £40m and consider wages of around £75,000 a week – which would put Sanchez among their top earners and only increase the discontent expressed by Danny Rose at the club’s relatively low wages among the rest of the team.

Tottenham have also bid for 20-year-old Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop and want Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzanigga as their summer recruitment finally begins to take shape.

Southampton are among the clubs who have an interest in Tottenham centre-back Kevin Wimmer.

Tottenham may abandon their bid for Ross Barkley

SIMON JONES: Tottenham will consider abandoning a bid for Ross Barkley if they succeed in signing Pape Cheikh Diop and Davinson Sanchez.

Mauricio Pochettino admires Everton and England midfielder Barkley but Tottenham have yet to bid for the 23-year-old as they believe he is over priced with a year remaining on his contract.

Tottenham have targeted athletic box to box midfielder Diop at Celta Vigo, though will offer less than his £25million buyout clause, while they are preparing to bid £35m for Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez this week.

Between them, they can play in the positions Barkley would occupy, attacking and central midfield roles, and Tottenham's coaching staff believe that would satisfy their requirements in the middle of the park.

Barcelona are hopeful of bringing Angel Di Maria to the Nou Camp this summer, after star man Lionel Messi reportedly encouraged a move for his fellow Argentine.

The Catalan giants are desperately seeking reinforcements following the shock departure of Neymar to Ligue 1.

Huge reservations remain however, concerning Barca's strained relations with the French club and whether these are beyond repair.

Stoke and West Brom in for Vincent Janssen

SIMON JONES: Stoke and West Brom are showing interest in Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen.

The Holland international is also wanted by Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.

Tottenham will consider offers for the 23-year-old who cost them £17million from AZ Alkmaar last summer where he had been top scorer in the Dutch league. Yet he has managed just six goals in 35 appearances, predominantly from the bench.

Janssen has had a thankless task competing with Harry Kane for the main striking role. He was criticised by manager Mauricio Pochettino for his workrate earlier in the season but is still coveted by Stoke and Albion who believe he can have a greater impact in the Premier League given more game time.

Monchengladbach, Lazio and Marseille have also shown an interest.

Well, it looks like the Neymar move to PSG is having an impact...

Real Madrid have slapped an astronomical £640m (€700m) release clause on playmaker Isco, following the Spaniard's recent emergence as a star man for Zinedine Zidane's side.

The move appears to be a precautionary step from the Spanish giants to prevent themselves falling victim to having a prized asset stolen from under their nose.

Spurs preparing £35m bid for Ajax star

SIMON JONES: Tottenham are preparing a £35million bid for Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

He turned down Barcelona to join Ajax for £3.6million from Atletico Nacional last summer and made an immediate impact. Tottenham's bid will be a club record, outstripping the £30m they paid for Moussa Sissoko last year.

Tottenham have also bid for 20-year-old Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop and want Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzanigga as their summer recruitment finally begins to take shape.

CRAIG HOPE: Newcastle owner Mike Ashley says he cannot afford to give Rafa Benitez the transfer funds he wants and insists the manager must work with the money the club generate.

There is tension behind the scenes at St James' Park on the eve of the new season. Benitez is unhappy about the club's transfer business, and has admitted he is now targeting players he does not 'necessarily want'. Newcastle have spent £30million on five players and Benitez recently called on Ashley to 'keep his word' on the promise of investment.

But the Sports Direct tycoon has hit back by revealing he 'cannot and will not' attempt to compete with the division's richer clubs.

CHRIS WHEELER: Eliaquim Mangala could be handed a lifeline at Manchester City if Pep Guardiola fails to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window closes.

The Frenchman has been a major disappointment since joining City in a £42million deal in 2014, and spent last season on loan at Valencia.

Mangala, 26, was set to join the defensive clear-out at the Etihad this summer after accepting that he was surplus to requirements under Guardiola.

Bruno Martins Indi is ready to put protracted negotiations behind him and achieve 'special things' with Stoke after finally signing a permanent deal with the club.

The 25-year-old Holland international, who spent last season on loan with the Potters from Porto, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

Stoke confirmed the two clubs had agreed a transfer fee of almost £7million for the central defender, whose contractual issues with the Portuguese club had been a contributory factor in delaying the deal.

DOMINIC KING: Philippe Coutinho does not want to play for Liverpool again after he stunned them on the eve of the new season with a transfer request.

The Brazil international, who has been the subject of two failed bids from Barcelona, sent an email to Liverpool's Sporting Director Michael Edwards Friday lunchtime informing him of his wish to quit the club. It was immediately rejected.

Coutinho's demand came on a dramatic day for Liverpool, which started with Fenway Sports Group, the club's American owners, issuing a statement to say they would not sanction the 25-year-old's sale at any price and considered the matter closed.
