Everton Premier League season 17-18 preview: Martin Keown's guide

The Premier League season is now just hours away, and it is time to look ahead to how the 20 teams will all get on.

Sportsmail has recruited columnist Martin Keown to run through reasons to be cheerful and fearful, as well as the key player and major signings.

Here is the lowdown on Everton...

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

Ronald Koeman - The Dutchman has brought a level of excitement that has not been felt at Everton for a number of years. He has been incredibly active in the transfer market and has been open in discussing the Ross Barkley situation.

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

In recent years, Everton have not seemed active enough in the transfer market. This year, with a very ambitious manager, they have got most of their business done early. The return of Wayne Rooney is a huge positive. He has had an outstanding career and will go back to Goodison Park as a fan wanting to give everything to the cause.

REASONS TO BE FEARFUL

The club must continue to back Ronald Koeman with funds to allow Everton to challenge for the top four or he could walk. Everton's net summer spend is only £2million after the sales of Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Tom Cleverley. It remains to be seen if Sandro Ramirez and Rooney can fill the void left by Lukaku, who was involved in half of Everton's goals in 2016-17.
