Premier League announce first new set of name and number styles in 10 years with five colours to choose from

The Premier League has announced a complete revamp of name and number styles for the upcoming season in what constitutes the first change to the regulations for a decade.

Clubs will now be given the choice of five different colour combinations for name and number printings on their shirts. The first designs were brought in for the 1997-98 campaign.

The five new approved designs are: white with black details, plus black, navy, red, or yellow, all with white details. Teams will be encouraged to choose one that will stand in contrast to their kits.

Announcing the new styles, a statement from the Premier League read: 'The Premier League and its official partner Sporting iD worked closely to develop the modern and vibrant designs, featuring updated lettering which aligns with the Premier League's visual identity.'

It is not the only change brought in by the Premier League ahead of the new campaign. The league recently announced a ban on all elaborate pitch designs in an effort to keep their regulations in line with UEFA.

Groundsmen at Leicester City and Southampton have wowed the crowds with fantastic displays on the grass, but now clubs will only be able to create traditional horizontal lines, which help officials with offside decisions.

A statement read: 'Pitch patterns and designs will no longer be allowed in the Premier League in 2017/18. 'Rules state that the playing surface must contain no markings other than the traditional horizontal and white lines.'

The new season kicks off next Friday as Arsenal host Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium with the rest of the fixtures being played out across the weekend. Chelsea get their title defence underway against Burnley at home on Saturday.
