The England striker took to Instagram on Friday morning to upload a photo of himself hanging out with Sheeran, who performed a gig in Newcastle on Thursday, captioning the post: 'Just chilling with Ed, great guy and an amazing night.'
A weekend off from top flight action comes as a welcome break to Defoe and his Sunderland team-mates with the Black Cats rooted to the bottom of the table.
Sunderland currently sit three points behind 19th-placed Middlesbrough and nine points adrift of Premier League safety.
Moyes' side face a crunch match next against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday, April 26 and must win to keep any slim hopes of survival alive.

Meanwhile, Sunderland's Fabio Borini, who scored a late equaliser for the club last time out in the 2-2 draw against West Ham at the Stadium of Light, believes it has been harder this season in the top flight as the side haven't been as united.
'It's harder than previous times I think,' he said. 'We have not been at our level and we have not been a united group as previous seasons. That's what has been the problem.
'There has been a little bit of problems within the dressing room, but that's for us to deal with it.'
