Liverpool vs Chelsea: Five things to watch in the International Champions Cup match in California

  • Liverpool play Chelsea in all-English International Champions Cup match
  • Game takes place at the 92,000-capacity Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena
  • Both Jurgen Klopp and Antonio Conte have pretty much full-strength squads
  • Wednesday night's match is first of three US pre-season games for both

It is a stunning setting befitting of a meeting between two of English football's biggest teams.

The 92,000-capacity Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena will welcome Liverpool and Chelsea on Wednesday night as the International Champions Cup continues in California.

For the Premier League sides, it is the first of three pre-season matches during their time in the United States and an opportunity for their managers to fine-tune ahead of the big kick-off on August 13.

The fixture, which has a kick-off time of 4.35am UK time on Thursday morning, is being shown live on Chelsea TV and LFCTV only.

Here's five things to look out for...

KLOPP AND CONTE GO HEAD-TO-HEAD

Both Jurgen Klopp and Antonio Conte are known for their touchline fireworks, so the managers should offer an entertaining sideshow should the action prove a little pedestrian.

Klopp seems to be enjoying the task of remoulding the Liverpool team in his own style this summer and, for the first time in their pre-season schedule, he has a full squad at his disposal.

His technical area theatrics are unfailingly entertaining and he'll meet a kindred spirit in Conte, who is among the most animated and passionate in the game.

The Italian, who is settling into his role at Stamford Bridge, has a 30-man squad to choose from, so we should see two strong line-ups.

Chelsea and Liverpool have had a simmering rivalry for some time, with many memorable meetings between the two, and a new chapter is set to begin with these two in charge.

RETURN OF THE EURO 2016 PLAYERS

Naturally, those who participated in the European Championship were granted a couple of weeks' extra holiday but, bar one or two exceptions, they are now back in full training and ready for action.

England may have bombed out to Iceland at the last-16 stage, but their Liverpool quintet of Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne were still granted a longer break.

All could feature against Chelsea, though the Belgians Christian Benteke, Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi, and Germany's Emre Can, who emerged from the tournament with far greater credit, will probably need a little more time.

The Blues are boosted by the arrival of Belgian pair Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard following their country's run to the quarter-finals and Spaniards Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Cesar Azpilicueta.

So in contrast to earlier friendlies in Europe, we will now see the teams much closer to full strength.

NEW SIGNINGS ON DISPLAY

The greatest pleasure of pre-season is seeing new signings in action and our American audience for this one should be in for a treat.

Klopp could hand debuts to Georginio Wijnaldum, the Holland midfielder who rushed over to San Francisco after completing his £25m move, and Ragnar Klavan, the Estonian defender who is expected to come in for the injured Joel Matip.

Other new faces who could feature are Sadio Mane, Loris Karius and Marko Grujic as they seek to win a starting place for the visit to Arsenal on the Premier League's opening weekend.

Chelsea don't yet have £32m signing from Leicester N'Golo Kante with them, but there should be another outing for £33m Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi, who made his debut in last Wednesday's 3-0 win over RZ Pellets.

GLIMPSE OF THE NEXT GENERATION

Liverpool and Chelsea have players from their academy with them in the US though perhaps the best they can hope for is a few minutes from the bench now the teams are back to full strength.

Liverpool have Cameron Brannagan, Sheyi Ojo, Ovie Ejaria and Trent Alexander-Arnold in their ranks with the idea that they gain as much experience of being around the first team as possible.

Likewise Chelsea have Tammy Abraham, Nathan Baxter, Fikayo Tomori, Michael Hector, Ola Aina and Matt Miazga in their selection as Conte casts his eye over the extended squad.

THERE IS SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR

This year's International Champions Cup tournament is divided into three zones, Australia, China and USA/Europe. Naturally, this match is part of the latter and that is the biggest, with 10 teams involved.

After this one, Liverpool go on to play Milan in Santa Clara on Saturday and Barcelona at Wembley Stadium on August 6. Their third pre-season match in the States - against Roma in St Louis on August 1 - is not part of the competition.

Chelsea go on to play Real Madrid in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Saturday and then AC Milan in Minnesota on August 3.

Both have come close to winning it before - Chelsea lost 3-1 to Real in the final of the inaugural ICC in 2013, while Liverpool lost by the same scoreline to Manchester United a year later.
