Manchester United look certain to become the first Premier League club to smash through the £1 billion barrier of all-time Premier League prize earnings next season, according to new analysis of payments to clubs.

Figures released on Tuesday show that Arsenal have topped the payments for the 2015-16 season with £101m while even bottom club Aston Villa picked up £66m.

Now a study by Spreadex, an online betting firm, shows that United top the all-time earnings since 1992-93 with £870.3m - and that will almost certainly surpass £1bn in total at the end of next season.

If evidence were needed that United remain the Premier League's major financial powerhouse as Jose Mourinho is set to take over from Louis Van Gaal, these numbers prove it.

Clubs next season will receive between £100m for finishing bottom of the table to more than £150m for winning, so any top-eight finish will be enough to put United past £1bn.

In the all-time table released on Tuesday, Arsenal are in second place on £843m, with Liverpool (on £815.4m) just a few thousand pounds ahead of Chelsea, then Tottenham and Manchester City making up the rest of the top six.

The study has considered payments to every team that has received Premier League prize cash in the 24 years of its existence. So that includes not just the 47 teams to have played in the division but also Notts County and Luton who benefitted from parachute funds in the first season having missed out on the first season.

Eleven clubs have made more than £500m in Premier League prize money. The 2015-16 champions Leicester are in 25th place on the all-time list even after picking up £93.2m for their winning season.

This season, clubs received £1.64bn between them in prize money. Over the past 24 years, the Premier League has paid out £14.8bn in prize money and parachute payments combined.

'With the Premier League 25th anniversary next year, we thought it would be interesting to see the full amounts that clubs have been awarded in prize money over the years,' said Andy Mackenzie, of Spreadex, said.

'The prize money awarded to clubs is staggering – even teams that finish in the relegation positions now receive amounts that are eye-watering by anyone's standards. With 24 years of consistent growth, this shows that the English Premier League is arguably the most marketable and successful sports league worldwide.'
