Steven Whittaker's contract was due to expire in the summer but he has agreed a one-year deal with the option of another 12 months.
'I'm over the moon to stay here, I've really enjoyed my four years, Whittaker told the club's website.
'The manager spoke to me towards the end of the season and said it was a frustrating season for myself, but he reminded me what a great job I'd done for him in the Championship and he believes I can do that again.'
Mats Hummels' switch of allegiance became official on Monday after he was pictured putting pen-to-paper on a Bayern Munich deal.
Hummels was all smiles in Bavaria as he officially signed a five-year contract with the German giants next to club chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
The centre back also posed alongside the latter as he held a Bayern Munich home shirt ahead of next season.
SIMON JONES: Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote is wanted by West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace.
The 29-year-old is one of five first team players expected to depart following Newcastle's relegation.
He came close to leaving for China in January and February after receiving three offers and has also had interest from Turkey.
Newcastle hope to recoup around £4million for a player who is out of contract next summer.
Storage boxes were spotted outside Jose Mourinho's west London home on Monday as his expected move to Manchester United accelerated.
After Louis van Gaal was sacked only two days after winning the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, United have moved quickly to secure their man.
The former Chelsea boss is expected to take over the reins at Old Trafford this week, with the club expected to make an official announcement shortly.
SIMON JONES: Manchester City expect to agree a four-year contract with Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund and are closing in on a deal for Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Gundogan, as reported by Sportsmail in March, has been eager to join up with Pep Guardiola and his decision has been hardened by City's continued show of support following his recent knee injury.
City and Dortmund are close to agreeing a £19.3million fee with bonuses to follow based on appearances. Gundogan is due back from injury around September.
And that's where Mats Hummels is now officially, having put pen to paper on a five-year deal following a a £30million transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
SIMON JONES: Aston Villa remain keen on signing Ross McCormack from Fulham but could face competition from Newcastle and Norwich City.
The 29-year-old has a £12million clause in his contract but that hasn't deterred Villa who want a proven goalscorer to get them out of the Championship.
McCormack, a Scotland international, was the subject of a failed bid from Middlesbrough in January. He scored 23 goals last season as Fulham escaped relegation to League One.
Fulham have taken up the option to sign on-loan defender Michael Madl from Austrian side Sturm Graz.
The 28-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Championship side until the summer of 2018.
No official confirmation has been made but reports are suggesting Nico Gaitan's move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid for around £19million is a done deal - although it's one which is likely not to be confirmed until after this weekend's Champions League final.
Burnley are back in the Premier League next term, but the Championship winners have already had a summer clear out, releasing keeper Matt Gilks, Matty Taylor and Lloyd Dyer.
Michael Duff, the only player who remained from their top flight season in 2009-10, has also not been given a new playing deal but the 38-year-old will be kept on by the club as an Under 18 coach.
Jurgen Klopp is keen to land the Bayern Munich midfielder, who he helped make a star during their time together at Borussia Dortmund.
But Gotze, who has split with his agent, has not exactly put the wheels in motion for an Anfield move, telling German daily Bild that he is 'looking forward to the new Bayern season' and 'I will do everything possible to compete in top shape during my first training session with Carlo Ancelotti.'
That move is not dead in the water, but doesn't exactly sound like it's close to final stages.
Liverpool are already in the process of signing a new goalkeeper, but it could prove a rather busy summer for Jurgen Klopp.
Emerging as a potential Reds target is Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Ante Coric, who has been linked as a £10million target for Spurs and Manchester City.
The Merseyside outfit though could be willing to bid £12million to land the 19-year-old Croatian.
We know who's gone and who's coming in, but the big question at Manchester United is will he stay or will he go?
Talk around Old Trafford this morning was that he was heading for the exit but reports have emerged this afternoon that he has been offered a deal to stay.
Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan has the latest on Giggs' future here.
On a day where Manchester United have axed a manager it seems rather fitting a previous Red Devils boss has turned down the chance to take over at another club.
David Moyes was sacked from Old Trafford in 2014 and has not worked in England since. Aston Villa were keen on the Scot, who has been out of work since departing Real Sociedad last season, but Sportsmail understands Moyes doesn't fancy takeing over at Villa following their relegation to the Championship.
The Villa Park post has become a poisoned chalice in recent times - does anyone want the job?

Louis van Gaal has been sacked as Manchester United manager - with Jose Mourinho finally landing the job after months of talks.
Mourinho's primary target next season will be to qualify for the Champions League and bring back some excitement to Old Trafford.
Here, Sportsmail discusses some of the issues which could arise when Mourinho arrives.
It's now being reported that the club will NOT be making a statement on Van Gaal's position - which is odd given everything that has happened this morning.
Maybe it's not Mourinho coming in after all. I still wouldn't be surprised if Sir Alex Ferguson unveils himself as the new United manager in a fashion similar to how Vince McMahon revealed himself as the 'higher power' in the WWF once upon a time.
Because it's not just Manchester United ready to appoint a new manager.
Everton have been looking for a new boss since the sacking of Roberto Martinez before the final game of the Premier League season, and have held talks with Manuel Pellegrini, who will be replaced by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The managerial merry-go-round has been well oiled and is in full flow...
PHIL COSTA: Patrice Evra is set to extend his contract with Juventus until 2018 after announcing that he has reached an agreement with the club.
The former Manchester United left back has played a crucial role under Massimiliano Allegri since arriving on a free transfer in 2014, winning back-to-back Serie A and Coppa Italia titles.
The 35-year-old's consistent form has seen retain his place as first-choice left-back for the majority of the campaign, despite the arrival last year of Alex Sandro from Porto for a reported €26million (£20 million) fee.
One team whose season is far from finished are Atletico Madrid, as they prepare to take on city rivals Real in the Champions League final on Saturday.
But whether they are crowned European champions or not, the Spanish outfit are already looking to do summer business with Gazzetta reporting Diego Simeone's outfit have made an £11.6m bid, plus £1.6m in add ons, to Lazio for Antonio Candreva.
The two teams are far apart in valuations though for the Italy winger, with Lazio demanding over £19m.
We won't need to wait long to find out the fall-out from Van Gaal's sacking. Manchester United are due to make a 1pm BST press conference where they will confirm the Dutchman's departure - and whether Giggs has indeed followed...
Romelu Lukaku says there was a breakdown in the relationship between the Everton players and Roberto Martinez before he was sacked towards the end of the Premier League season.
Despite the Merseyside club reaching the semi-finals of both domestic cups this season, Martinez was sacked on May 12 after a slump in their league form.
'The team did not perform at all. We won two of our last 11 games. When things are broken between the manager and the players it become difficult,' Lukaku said at the weekend as he began preparations with Belgium for next month's European Championship.
We've already heard that Louis van Gaal's Dutch assistant coach Albert Stuivenberg and goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek have left the club but joining them out the Old Trafford exit door will also be performance analyst Max Reckers.
He was like a son to Van Gaal, but not as popular with players as we reported earlier in the season...
DOMINIC KING: Loris Karius is a step closer to completing his £4.7million move from Mainz to Liverpool after he arrived on Merseyside to complete his medical.
The German goalkeeper, who spent part of his youth career with Manchester City, will arrive to put pressure on current No 1 Simon Mignolet.
He will be the third signing of what is anticipated to be a busy summer at Anfield, following on from Joel Matip and Marko Grujic.
Liverpool are still pursuing a move for Mario Gotze but the fact they cannot offer Champions League football next season might be a stumbling block.
No sooner had Manchester United lifted the FA Cup than talk of Jose Mourinho replacing Louis van Gaal began to overshadow their triumph.
Van Gaal reacted with anger when asked about his future in the post-final press conference but his fate was sealed.
With the former Chelsea coach likely to be appointed this week, Sportsmail’s Chris Wheeler assesses what his arrival would mean for United’s Wembley winners.
Just two days after winning the FA Cup, Manchester United have sacked Louis van Gaal as boss.
Jose Mourinho will take over and the move has also seen Van Gaal's Dutch assistant coach Albert Stuivenberg and goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek also depart Old Trafford.
JACK GAUGHAN: Zlatan Ibrahimovic is high on Jose Mourinho’s wishlist at Manchester United.
The Portuguese is expected to be announced as Louis van Gaal’s successor this week and knows added firepower is a necessity next season.
United mustered just 49 Premier League goals this year - their worst record for more than a quarter of a century - just 11 more than Ibrahimovic scored on his own in Ligue 1.
SAMI MOKBEL: Manchester United players have major reservations about the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club’s next manager.
The Special One is set to be named as Louis van Gaal’s successor this week, ending months of speculation linking him with the Old Trafford job.
However, Sportsmail understands a number of senior players are unconvinced Mourinho is the right man for the job.
Sportsmail understands Paul Gilroy is at Carrington and he was the LMA lawyer who represented David Moyes - and it didn't end too well for the previous United boss...
SIMON JONES: Mourinho expects to have more talks tomorrow over a three-year-deal with Rui Faria and Silvino Louro the goalkeeping coach expected to follow.
JAMIE REDKNAPP: People will say that Jose Mourinho is not a Manchester United manager but this is the move they simply had to make.
It's time for United to get in the real world. Like it or not, they are in the rat race like everybody else. The last two years have been far from enjoyable and United had to act now and bring in a serial winner.
In David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, United have gone from one extreme to another and they need to realise they will not find another Sir Alex Ferguson who will dominate football for 26 years at one club.
SIMON JONES: Ed Woodward has arrived at Manchester United's Carrington training complex ahead of talks with Louis Van Gaal.
The United executive vice-chairman is expected to inform Van Gaal he will no longer continue as manager as they look to appoint Jose Mourinho as his successor.
Van Gaal arrived at Carrington at around 8.45am and his entire coaching staff are also present as they await to learn their fate this morning.
Belgium's preparations for next month's European Championship have suffered a blow with the news that midfielder Radja Nainggolan will be sidelined for two weeks due to a small tear in his calf muscle.
The 28-year-old Roma midfielder, a summer transfer target for Chelsea, is central to Belgium coach Marc Wilmots' plans and the layoff will keep him out until their final friendly against Norway in Brussels on June 5.
Belgium, who are preparing in Lausanne this week, have a friendly against Switzerland scheduled for Saturday in Geneva and a warm-up against Finland in Brussels on June 1.
It's not all Jose Mourinho and Manchester United, folks. Son Heung-min has moved to play down reports he will leave Tottenham Hotspur after just one season.
The South Korean has failed to hit the heights expected following a £22m switch from Bayer Leverkusen and was criticised for his display following Spurs' 5-1 defeat at Newcastle United on the last day of the season.

The Portuguese is set to take over from Louis van Gaal this week and has No 2 Rui Faria and goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro primed to join him.

An agreement was reached midway through the season to give United the option of bringing him in if Van Gaal failed to meet their targets.
Sportsmail can also reveal that Mourinho refused to accept a 'behavioural clause' in his five-year, £75m deal despite concerns among the United hierarchy over his eccentric touchline behaviour.
The Premier League and FA Cup competitions are now over, but that doesn't mean the top flight drama ends there.
