Do you think Harry Kane will be the Premier League top-scorer next season? @TalkingTHFC

I think it’ll be an interesting season for Spurs, to see how they’ve progressed. They haven’t spent very much compared to some of their rivals, but they look to have consolidated what they have.

Mauricio Pochettino has built a reputation for developing a club’s young players, and he will want to see Kane pick up where he left off last season. I can still see him scoring plenty of goals – you’ve only got to think back to when he destroyed Chelsea at White Hart Lane last season for an example of his quality.

But I find it tough to look past Sergio Aguero for the Golden Boot. He won it last season and when he’s fit and healthy he’s a defender’s worst nightmare. Diego Costa should be up there after an excellent first season in the Premier League, though he isn’t an out-and-out goal machine – he does a lot more for the team.

I can see Eden Hazard getting more goals this season as he moves more centrally. When you look at the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Gareth Bale, they score more goals when they move inside from the wings. Quicker full backs can often mark them, but they can destroy centre backs with their pace. I could see him developing like Ronaldo if he keeps coming into the middle of the pitch.

What are you expecting from the Community Shield this weekend? Does it tell you much about the season ahead? Joe in Sydney

I was disappointed with Manchester City in last season’s Community Shield. They were the Premier League champions but they seemed complacent, and this is something that kept resurfacing throughout the season. I don’t expect to see any of that complacency from Chelsea this weekend.

Mourinho creates an energy and intensity among his players, and he is very proud of his record against Wenger. He’ll be desperate to keep those bragging rights, and even if it was a three-legged race he’d be desperate to beat him!

When United beat us under Sir Alex Ferguson he would say that the victory would set them up for the season and give them a huge boost. Whereas when we beat them, he’d insist that the Community Shield was no reflection on how the season would pan out!

What are your memories of pre-season training? Beth in London

I did 23 pre-seasons and none of them were easy! During my early days at Arsenal, both Don Howe and George Graham were massive on fitness. We needed a map and compass to accomplish some of the cross-country runs Graham sent us on, and there was always a feeling of dejection when you started one of Howe’s runs – you knew you were going to be running up hill for the next 20 minutes.

One time under Graham, he made us run 10 yards, then 20, then 30 all the way to 100, followed by another 50 yards and two more hundred-yard runs. At the end of that we’d all be flat on the floor and he’d be going berserk, telling us to get on our feet and do it again. Afterwards he’d say, ‘I’ve proved you can achieve something you didn’t think you could, now take that lesson into the season’.

Under Wenger there was hardly any running, it was all about ball work – though I suppose it was disguised running, as it didn’t feel so bad when you had the ball at your feet. But whoever the manager was, they’d always have you looking forward to the first game of the season.

How essential is it that #AFC sign another striker? Can they win the #PL with Giroud, Welbeck, Walcott? @MitchWaddon

I think Arsenal’s priority will be to sign a top striker, as a marquee signing can feel like you’ve landed a psychological blow against your opposition. It makes teams sit up and take notice. He wasn’t a striker, but think back to when Arsenal signed Sol Campbell. We already had an array of centre backs at the time, but his arrival really raised the bar.

Mourinho may be sitting uneasy at the moment as Chelsea’s title rivals do a lot of business. His side may still be favourites, but they will have to play better and work harder than they did last year.

Only Wenger knows whether Arsenal will sign a new striker or not, and he may well be working towards something at this moment. But think about two seasons ago when Arsenal lost the first game of the season against Aston Villa at home. Wenger went out and bought Mesut Ozil afterwards, and making that marquee signing saw Arsenal take off.

I still feel Olivier Giroud will play a major part this season. He scored plenty of goals last season, but they will probably be looking for someone with different qualities at the moment. Someone with more pace and power.

Which top club do you think has bought the most shrewdly?

It’s so difficult to tell until we’re a fair way into the season, but at the moment I’d have to say Manchester United. They’ve bought a lot of big names, but look how Angel di Maria turned out last season!

I think Morgan Schneiderlin is a really good signing. He’s good in and out of possession, and he understands the Premier League. He also played well when Southampton won at Old Trafford last season.

There were times last season when United struggled to control games, and this was largely down to their midfield. They missed Michael Carrick when he was injured, but now they’ll have him back along with Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. I think what they need now is a centre forward. But we could see many teams going in for a striker at the end of the transfer window.

Do you think Arsenal can risk not signing another defensive midfielder as cover for Francis Coquelin? @AfcYoungking10

Arsenal have so many gifted midfielders, and if Coquelin isn’t available Arsene Wenger will want to plug the gap with a player who will control the game, rather than a physical presence. At the moment he feels that Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini can fill in for Coquelin when he’s unavailable, and I could also see him going with the likes of Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere or Aaron Ramsey in deeper central role in that situation. That would suit Wenger’s philosophy.

Coquelin was a huge bonus last season – one of the first names on the teamsheet - and there will be lots riding on Arteta when he is asked to fill in. He’s a good player to have around, as he has a good attitude and is well respected. But he may find it difficult to stay fit if he’s not playing regularly.

What are your views on Liverpool summer signings? @lgmafish

I think this will be a big season for Danny Ings. He needs to show that he really is good enough. He had a spell last season when he didn’t score any goals when Burnley were relying on him. They might have stayed up if he had carried on scoring. He had a good season, but expectations will be higher at Liverpool. Can he make the step up?

Christian Benteke is an outstanding signing, though it concerns me whether he will fit in to Brendan Rodgers’ style of play. Rodgers inherited Andy Carroll – one of the best headers of the ball in the Premier League in recent times – and he was deemed unsuitable for the philosophy Rodgers wanted to implement at the club. Benteke is more mobile than Carroll, but his aerial power is his strength.

James Milner is also a good acquisition, and he has a point to prove. But Rodgers know he has to get off to a good start this season, as there has been lots of talk of other managers waiting in the wings to replace him.

What kind of reception do you think Petr Cech will get from Chelsea fans on Sunday? Thomas, Sevenoaks

I think he should be getting an outstanding reception. He’s been one of the best Premier League keepers of all time, and Chelsea fans will hopefully understand that it’s all about getting playing time. Roman Abramovich allowed him to go and Jose Mourinho clearly didn’t want to sell him to Arsenal, but he sees that Thibaut Courtois is the future.

The Community Shield this weekend could be an emotional day for him, but it’ll be better to get it out of the way before the season starts. Though it’ll still be strange for him when he goes into the away dressing room at Stamford Bridge this season!

I think he’s an excellent signing for Arsenal. He’s used to winning things and everyone will see how he conducts himself and trains. He will be demanding of the players around him and will act as a driving force. You need those sort of characters.

Who would you pick at centre back for Manchester United next season to play with Jonny Evans: Chris Smalling or Phil Jones? Chris from Lewes

I think Smalling turned a corner last season. When Louis van Gaal moved him from the left side of central defence to the right, he looked a lot more assured. It had an instant effect on his passing, and everything else improved as a result. He seemed to grow as a player.

The same thing happened to me as a player. So I’d start with him, but discarding Jones would be a big dilemma for Van Gaal. He could see it as his challenge to turn Jones into the player many thought he would be. Perhaps the comparison with Duncan Edwards has been a big cross to bear for him.

I find him unconvincing. He plays like a stuntman – he’s so theatrical. But managers often want their defenders to play in a steadier fashion, and he seems like he’s trying too hard to prove he’s the player people thought he would be.
