Petr Cech will succeed at Arsenal if he forgets emotional ties to Chelsea, says former Gunners stopper Jens Lehmann

  • Petr Cech moved from Chelsea to Arsenal for £10m late last month
  • Former Gunners keeper Jens Lehmann believes he will perform well
  • But he must first remove all emotional connection to his old club
  • Cech won four Premier League titles and European Cup with the Blues

Petr Cech must forget about any emotional connection to former club Chelsea if he is to succeed at Arsenal, according to ex-Gunners goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

After 11 successful years at Stamford Bridge, which yielded four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League, Cech completed his move to north London last month in a deal worth £10m.

And German stopper Lehmann, who was part of the famous Arsenal 'Invincibles' team of 2004, has tipped Cech to inspire his new team to success once he has overcome the emotional wrench of leaving Chelsea.

He told The Sun: 'It's not easy to suddenly go from Chelsea, where he has spent almost his whole career winning many trophies, to the other side of the capital with a rival.

'Before you can have it in your heart to win titles again, you have to get rid of the love you had before.

'At Chelsea, for Petr, it was his passion and he showed great commitment. But, as a professional, he needs to get over it and needs to know Arsenal want him to win things again for them.

'Yet, let me tell you, that is not an easy thing to get over psychologically. It can take a few weeks, even a few months.'

Cech made 486 appearances during his 11 years at Stamford Bridge but, at the age of 33, Lehmann believes he can still offer Arsenal another 'five fantastic years'.

The German also believes Cech's winning mentality will rub off in the dressing room as the Gunners seek to build on their back-to-back FA Cup triumphs to claim a first Premier League title since 2004.

He added: 'With someone in there like Petr, with Per Mertesacker now as captain, they can re-establish this winning attitude and mentality.'
