Arsenal open internal investigation after fan launches red wine at Man United bench

Arsenal have opened an internal inquiry after a supporter launched red wine at the Manchester United bench on Saturday.

A man has been arrested after throwing the beverage at the visiting dug-out following United’s opening goal at the Emirates Stadium.

The wine is said to have hit members of the United party, though Louis van Gaal’s side had the last laugh as they secured their first away win of the season.

Gunners chiefs are co-operating fully with the Metropolitan Police’s enquires and have vowed to ban the fan from the Emirates Stadium if found guilty.

Police chiefs and Arsenal were analysing CCTV footage of the incident on Sunday.

United were on Sunday night refusing to rule out making an official complaint to the FA regarding the incident, but are understood to be happy with the way Arsenal have dealt promptly with the matter.

Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been openly critical of the lack of protection afforded to the dug-outs at the Emirates Stadium.

He said in 2008: ‘It is too open for my liking. It should not happen when you build a modern stadium. You need tin helmets.

‘It is a weakness in the planning that you don’t provide safety for the visiting substitutes and staff.’
