Sportsmail columnist Martin Keown answered your questions about a thrilling Champions League programme and also looked ahead to the weekend's Premier League action.

In the week's biggest clash, Real Madrid ran out comfortable winners against Liverpool at Anfield with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the pick of the goals and Carlo Ancelotti's side now take on their great rivals Barcelona in La Liga.

But Mario Balotelli endured another tough night as he struggles to find his form in the red of Liverpool. The striker was hooked at half-time but not before he had swapped his shirt with Pepe.

Arsenal, meanwhile, needed a late, late winner from Lukas Podolski at Anderlecht to remain on course to reach the knockout stages.

This Sunday, Chelsea travel to Manchester United, possibly without striker Diego Costa, while champions Manchester City visit in-form West Ham.

Do United have a chance against Chelsea given the injuries to Costa and Remy? From @himanshsingla97 on Twitter

I think they do have a chance to be honest. With all the great attacking players they have at their disposal, of course they’ve got a chance. But is Louis van Gaal going to set up a team to stop Chelsea or go for it?

If they’re going to go for it they need to be a lot more secure defensively. They don’t want to be embarrassed. Does Van Gaal think his team can outwit and outplay Mourinho’s? If you talk about Chelsea going unbeaten all season, this is one of the biggest hurdles.

Going to Old Trafford is a difficult trip for anyone. United are lacking consistency in 90 minutes, let alone game to game. But if they can get that consistency together for a full game they could be the team that finally slows Chelsea down.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Costa plays though, the way Mourinho is. You have to expect the unexpected with him. Even if Costa plays, it’s not a foregone conclusion. It would be a huge boost to Chelsea because he has been a revelation but with the firepower United have, and the home crowd behind them, they do still have a chance.

This is one of those weeks where Man United have had an extra few days to prepare without the Champions League to worry about. This is where we see how good a coach Van Gaal is and how much work he’s done on the pitch.

West Ham v Man City is now a top four clash! Southampton are third. Is there any hope one of the ‘smaller’ clubs could replicate what Nottingham Forest did under Brian Clough and Ipswich did under Bobby Robson and have a go? Tim Brownsdon, from email

No, I don’t think so. I’d love to think it could happen but I doubt it very much. Every week that goes by at the moment you see new, different teams towards the top of the Premier League but we’re now in a very different period to what happened then.

I’ve been in to the boardroom at Forest and it’s quite surreal. It’s like a drinks cabinet you might see in a B&B. Those trophies are so iconic and part of their history and legacy. They should be displayed right at the front entrance for all to see, somewhere where they can inspire the next generation. Not hidden away.

But it’s when you see those trophies tucked away you see how relatively small they were as club and just how astonishing their achievement was. The money involved now sadly makes it almost impossible for that to happen. Those clubs flew the flag in those days but it’s increasingly difficult for anyone to match those feats.

Are Chelsea English football’s only hope of a team making a deep run in the Champions League, especially after last night? @ScottCarnegie2

It’s starting to look that way, Scott. Even they only managed a draw in their first game but others are not quite there. There is a development and a learning phase in European football but I don’t think Man City have made it through that yet. Even I was guilty of channel hopping when they were on. They looked so comfortable against CSKA Moscow and you have to wonder how they threw it away.

I had difficult occasions playing in Russia, it’s such a long journey and it could impact their game on Saturday. I can see City winning the home game 3-0 or 4-0 but they don’t seem to travel well. Once you’re in front it’s criminal to let that slip. But it will still be a job for them to get through.

Liverpool might have lost against Real but other results went well for them and shows the importance of that late win against Ludogorets. When we saw Tottenham in the Champions League they took it by storm, which proves you can come in and do well but I don’t see that happening for Liverpool.

Real and Bayern are the teams to aspire to in the Champions League, but there is a big gap for a team who has been out for so many years. To bridge that gap is so difficult. Tottenham did that but had Gareth Bale coming through and it helps to have an outstanding player emerging.

That leaves Arsenal. Firstly they should be able to secure qualification if Dortmund do a job for them against Galatasaray. If they know they’ve qualified they will really be able to go for it against Dortmund and if they win they might have a chance of topping the group, which would help them going forward.

Chelsea have made an impressive start to the season both at home and abroad

Should Podolski see more action? @Ugwuman on Twitter

I think he has a case for playing more with his goal-scoring record. Wenger used him as his last sub but he was the one who won the game. It wasn’t an easy goal either, he played it high into the net deliberately. He is lethal in front of goal. Even if his role is as super sub he doesn’t get used enough.

He had six minutes to make it a happy birthday for Wenger and he did that. I think he should be used more because he’s very useful. He might be an impact player but he needs more minutes than he’s getting to have those impacts. He knows every time he comes on he has to score to get a chance to come on again.

How impressed were you with Arsenal? They’re showing a lot of spirit to recover late this season. Sarah in Sussex

I think the best thing for Arsenal last night is to forget the performance and think about the result. Emiliano Martinez in goal handled the situation incredibly well, but Anderlecht aren’t really the sort of team to put the fear of God into you. But any European game can be difficult. The late goals showed the strength in depth that Wenger has with the substitutions he could make.

Who will win El Clasico? Vishnu in Ilford

It will be some game, that’s for certain. Luis Suarez should finally start for Barcelona but at the moment you have to wonder how he’ll get into the team! Neymar is finally producing it in a Barcelona shirt and Messi is now saying Neymar is the one. When great players start to say big things about you, you know you’ve arrived.

But it’s an interesting situation with two young pretenders at both clubs. You have Neymar learning from Messi at Barcelona and Gareth Bale emulating Ronaldo at Madrid. Neither can be underestimated and let’s just hope Bale is fit for Saturday because some of the things he was trying on international duty with Wales were ridiculous.

In terms of the game, they are never dull but with Madrid having home advantage I think they will edge it 3-2.

Ronaldo was as sensational as ever at Anfield. Ahead of El Clasico, are you a Messi or a Ronaldo man? Simon Cotterell via email

In every other era there’s only ever been one great player at a time – Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane. There have always been good players but they were the solo stand-out players. Now we’ve got two of them. That almost makes them better because they are competing directly against each other for goals. They are both match-winners and exceptional players, but I do have a favourite.

When you look at Ronaldo, his numbers and goals are phenomenal. But you look at his skillset and it is something that can be developed. You have seen his pace, energy, strength in the air and his power all increase. His technique has improved and there has been a noticeable development. Of course he is incredible, but he has made himself the player he is.

With Messi, it’s like he has a God-given talent. You look at videos of him as a kid and he’s doing all the same things as he is now – beating five or six players and curling it in the corner. There’s also something eye-pleasing about left-footed players. You saw it with Maradona and you see it with Messi. I love the way he runs around the ball to pass it into the corner. They are both exceptional players but I just prefer watching Messi.

Who’s the most famous person you’ve swapped shirts with? Liam S, Edinburgh

I was never one for going up to a player and asking for their shirt, though I did still do a quite a few swaps. But the most famous shirts I have are probably from some of the great Arsenal players I played alongside. I kept my England shirts and some precious Arsenal ones but when you have kids they will often ask you to swap with somebody so I’ve got quite a few.

One that sticks out was Sami Hyypia asking for mine after the FA Cup final we lost in 2001. To be honest I couldn’t care less because the last thing I wanted to keep was a shirt from that final! But now every time his shirt appears from a box in the cupboard it brings back all those bad memories.

I do remember seeing some Leicester players queuing up before a game to ask for Dennis Bergkamp’s shirt. As soon as that happened we knew we had them beaten. With Thierry Henry so many players asked for his shirt that the club threatened to start making him pay for his own at one point! For those of us who weren’t quite so in-demand it was always quite a funny experience. Though I can’t imagine why somebody wouldn’t want my shirt over Thierry’s…

Real Madrid were good, but Liverpool were so poor defensively. What is going wrong at the back for them? James Harrison, Cardiff

At the minute they lack leadership and organisation at the back and that was so obvious against a side as good as Madrid. The first goal was outstanding but I still feel Martin Skrtel could have done more. Against a player like Ronaldo, one of the very best on the planet, you have to work as quickly and early as you can to stop him. As soon as Ronaldo passed to James Rodriguez, Skrtel should have been aware of the run he was making. Once the ball was lifted over the top he had to cover Lovren and anticipate better. If Ronaldo could get there, so could Skrtel.

For the second nobody is looking for the centre forward when the ball gets played in. Because it’s him, people will say Balotelli should have closed down the cross but not once did Glen Johnson look around to see who was behind him and Benzema floats in unmarked at the back post. What happened to touch-tight marking in the box?

The third was criminal. To concede from a set piece is always bad and it was just so sloppy. Once the ball was on the ground, Skrtel should have just cleared it rather than trying to block off the player. Then Mignolet dives in with his feet when he should be braver and more commanding. It was a shambles.

Should Rodgers bomb him out in January? Chaz C, Essex

No I don’t think so. Balotelli’s performances are a shared responsibility – between him, his team-mates and the manager and his coaching staff. You can’t spend £16million and just get rid of him after a few weeks. And he’s not the only signing who has not worked. You look at the players they brought in from Southampton. Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert were three of Southampton’s best players last year but now their old club is flying and Liverpool have gone backwards. They were almost obvious signings for Liverpool but their replacements like Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle were more obscure replacements and so far are paying dividends.

But Rodgers has to stick with Balotelli, not just isolate him. Jose Mourinho called him an unmanageable player and all his issues could not have been more obvious before Rodgers signed him. But he must have seen something in him to buy him and now he’s got to work with Balotelli to bring those qualities out.

Balotelli has struggled for form since his £16million move from AC Milan

Should Balotelli apologise for swapping shirts? Steve Grey, Cheshire

Yes, I think so. It’s the appropriate thing to do because it was such an inappropriate action. When people are shocked and stunned by the performance, the last thing you want to be doing is swapping your shirt at half time. When you’re 3-0 down and you do that, it just looks like you’re giving up.

But you have to be careful of this all just becoming a Balotelli bandwagon. There is a lot wrong with Liverpool compared to last year and you can’t blame one player for where they are. There is no Luis Suarez and currently no Daniel Sturridge and they are struggling. You have to take collective responsibility for that and nobody should hide behind Mario Balotelli. At the minute it feels like too many past and present players want to do that.

12:30
Mario Balotelli. Where do you start? Surely players shouldn’t be swapping shirts at half-time? Angry Scouser via email

No, they shouldn’t. If you want to swap shirts then you should do it in the privacy of the dressing room. Doing it at half-time is completely inappropriate, especially when you’re being battered.

But I think it was probably a deliberate tactic from Madrid. They were trying to defuse Mario. It’s as if they thought: ‘Don’t make him angry, he’ll only play better.’ So they tried to be his mate and it worked. But for me you shouldn’t really be interacting at all with the opposition – you’re not out to make friends, you’re there to win.

With some of the foreign players I played with, they would often speak to their fellow countrymen on other teams. They were all very friendly with each other and that made me nervous. But as soon as they put the first tackle in, you knew you could rely on them. Once they got into match mode they were ready to do battle and would be offended if you questioned their professionalism.

It was a foolish act from Balotelli, but I would be more concerned about his current performances.
