Wayne Rooney leaves training in chauffeur-driven car as he faces £120,000 bill to get to work for the next two years after his drink-drive shame

  • Footballer admitted drink driving and is banned from the road for two years
  • He was driven to Everton's training ground this morning in a Range Rover
  • Former England captain faces bill of up to £120,000 to be driven around
  • He is reported to be building a new home nearer Merseyside to cut travel

Wayne Rooney faces a bill of up to £120,000 to have a chauffeur drive him to and from Everton's training ground following his driving ban for drink driving.

The former England captain arrived slumped down in a Range Rover at Everton's Finch Farm training ground this morning on the second of his 730 days banned from the road.

He left in the same vehicle five hours later as he gets used to spending time in the passenger seat.

Rooney issued a grovelling apology yesterday after he was given a two-year ban for being almost three times the drink-drive limit when he was stopped at the wheel of a car with Laura Simpson, a woman he had just met in a nightclub.

The footballer, whose marriage to wife Coleen now hangs in the balance, faces having to be driven the 75-mile round trip to training and back, as well getting lifts to matches and to his community service.

To add insult to injury, the route will take him past the Symposium nightclub in Wilmslow, Cheshire from where he drove Miss Simpson home and his night of shame began.

Yesterday's hearing was told that his club, Everton, are likely to fine him two weeks wages, or around £300,000, for his actions.

Everton are also unwilling to pay the estimated £120,000 bill for his two years being driven around by a chauffeur, The Sun reported today.

Rooney could cut his travel bill if he moves closer to Merseyside and it was reported he and Coleen were planning a custom-built mansion nearer his new club.

The family was linked with a six-bedroom mansion currently being built just 30 miles from Finch Farm, where Everton train.

Plans showed the house, which is being built on the site of a demolished farm, will have stables which can hold 15 horses, a six-car garage and even an orangery.

However, with Coleen having moved out of the couple's current home in the wake of the scandal, it is uncertain who will end up living where.

At yesterday's hearing, Rooney's lawyer unsuccessfully argued for him to spared a community order on the grounds that he did extensive charity work already.

But the judge said he didn't believe a fine would be sufficient punishment for the millionaire sportsman.

In the event, the court ordered 31-year-old Rooney to pay just £170 to cover court costs and a 'victim surcharge' – money the striker earns in around 12 minutes.

Had Rooney been just a little further over the alcohol limit – the equivalent of around one more drink – then the court would have had to consider a prison sentence.

As it was his first such offence he would have been highly unlikely to have been locked up, however.

Road safety charities slammed the outcome as 'a soft option'.

Here MailOnline looks at the supercars England's record goalscorer will have to leave in his garage for the next two years.

He was handed a 24 month driving ban and given 100 hours' community service as part of a 12-month community order.
