Thibaut Courtois thinks Chelsea have lost their defensive balance and mentality

Chelsea were thrashed 3-0 by Roma in the Champions League, costing them their place at the top of Group C.

The result was the second time they have conceded three goals to the Italian side this season and they have struggled for shut out teams all term.

Thibaut Courtois has kept just five clean sheets in all competitions this campaign and the goalkeeper thinks the Blues must rediscover their balance defensively.

“It is hard to say what the problem is this season,” Courtois said.

Antonio Conte insists he's happy at Chelsea amid exit rumours

“Last season in many games I had nothing to do, sometimes one or two saves.

“Sometimes in games against Manchester United or City maybe four or five saves but this season every game is a hard game for the defence.

“We have to find the balance again and the mentality of keeping clean sheets and not conceding chances, not letting them cross easy.

“Then we will be fine but obviously we have to react on Sunday because tonight was a bad image of ourselves. We don’t want that to happen again.”

Chelsea face United on Sunday at Stamford Bridge (4.30pm) and Courtois has called on his team-mates to give an immediate response in the game.

“I don’t know why in the second half we dropped out fighting spirit,” he added.

“We dropped out mentality a bit and that cannot happen of course so we have to fight back on sunday now.

“We must show the fans that this was an off day and we will move on.”
