Olivier Giroud won the award for his goal against Crystal Palace

Giroud won for his audacious flick in the New Year's Eve clash between the two sides and saw off competition from Venezuelan 18-year-old Deyna Castellanos and goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke to win the award.

Arsenal broke from the edge of the box with Hector Bellerin passing to Giroud midway through his own half.

The striker produced a back heel flick to Granit Xhaka, who laid the ball off to Alex Iwobi.

The young Nigerian carried the ball forward and then passed to Alexis Sanchez on the left side of the box.

Sanchez looked up and curled a cross into the area for the onrushing Giroud, who flicked the ball off his boot and over the despairing dive of Wayne Hennessey in the Palace goal.

Giroud said: "It's an honour for me. I'm delighted to receive the trophy in front of all these legends.

"Thanks to those who voted for me and congratulations to the other nominees.

"Without my team-mates I couldn't have scored. While I would also like to dedicate this to my father."

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo scooped FIFA's Best Player award for the second time.

"We are in England for the first time, and I win it for the second consecutive time. This is a great moment for me," Ronaldo told the ceremony audience at the London Palladium.
