What Man Utd players did on the pitch after Champions League was absolutely fantastic...

MANCHESTER UNITED players are battling it out for Champions League glory - but they still found time for an incredibly touching gesture tonight.

Man Utd players console Benfica goalkeeper after huge error

Bidding to stop them against Benfica was Mile Svilar, who at 18 became the youngest ever goalkeeper to start a Champions League game.

But young Svilar's dream quickly turned to an X-rated nightmare.

In the second half Marcus Rashford stepped up to take a free-kick 40 yards out on the left touchline and spotted Svilar off his line.

He duly lobbed the ball over him and though Svilar caught it, he failed to keep it from crossing the line to gift United the win.

The Belgian teen cut a devastated figure at the end of the game and he looked close to tears on the pitch.

But United players didn't just shake his hand and leave. Instead, senior figures including Romelu Lukaku and David De Gea spent time consoling the youngster - despite him playing for their Champions League rivals.

BT Sport host Gary Lineker, summing up the game, said: "That's a lovely touch there from the Manchester United players with the young goalkeepr Mile Svilar who obviously made a terrible mistake in the only goal of the game.

"It's nice to see a bit of sportsmanship from the United players, embracing him and hopefully encouraging him.

"He won't feel too good at the moment. The rest of his game, of course, was pretty solid.

"He struggled with crosses and then made that enormous mistake.

"He's the youngest goalkeeper ever to play in the Champions League and, for a few seconds, he looked like the youngest goalkeeper to ever play in the Champions League.

"You have to feel for him a bit, Rio?"

Svilar then begins to apologise to the crowd by holding up both hands to the stands.

Rio Ferdinand replied to Lineker and said: "He gestured to the crowd there to say sorry. It's a lonely place being in goal.

"I've done it once when the keeper got sent off and I thought never again.

"Making a mistake, at 18 years old, it was a huge night for him and he was doing alright up until that point.

"It was just an unfortunate error of judgement and there you are - 1-0."
