Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp will not compete with his current striking options - Aldridge

JURGEN KLOPP must enter the transfer market on the lookout for a potent striker, according to John Aldridge.

Liverpool had one of the most potent attack forces last season and had 18 Premier League goals at this stage last season but have only netted 13 times in the top flight this campaign.

Summer signing Mohamed Salah has proved an instant hit at Anfield and is their top scorer with eight goals in all competitions.

Roberto Firmino is their next highest scorer with six goals but Liverpool haven't had anyone score more than 20 goals in a season since Luis Suarez left to join Barcelona in 2014.

Daniel Sturridge has had a number of injury problems while Divock Origi has been loaned out to Wolfsburg and Dominic Solanke is seen as one for the future.

But Aldridge believes Klopp needs to be in the market for an out-and-out striker capable of getting Liverpool out of trouble.

“While this Liverpool team will score goals, they will not be complete until they get a potent lead striker and the players they have at the club now are not doing the job required of them,” Aldridge told the Irish Independent.

“Daniel Sturridge is not the player he was a couple of years back, Roberto Firmino will never be a lead striker and Dominic Solanke is a young kid making his way in the game.

“So Klopp and his transfer committee need to solve this scoring problem as soon as possible.”

Liverpool did create Champions League history last night when they recorded the biggest margin of victory by an English side away from home in Europe's elite club competition when they beat Maribor 7-0.

Firmino and Salah scored two each while Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold also got on the score-sheet.
