Alberto Moreno has won back his first-team place in the Liverpool starting XI

The left-back lost his place to midfielder James Milner last season and could have left Anfield in the summer, when Napoli bid £11 million for him and both AC and Inter Milan were interested.

And boss Jurgen Klopp, who went on to buy Andrew Robertson, told Moreno he wanted another left-back – but the Spaniard decided to stay anyway.

Moreno said: “I spent a whole year without playing many games at all. It was a bad season for me. The word was that I would be leaving and I should leave.

“However, at no point did I agree. I wanted to fight for my future at this club. My critics should shut their mouths now.”

Moreno sought out Klopp for pre-season talks. “He was very honest.

"He said: ‘I can’t promise you a place in the side. I am signing a new left-back.’ But he encouraged me to keep working.”

Now Moreno is keeping Robertson and Milner out of the team. “I am very happy personally the way things are going this season. I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

But things could be better for Liverpool’s defence. They have conceded 19 goals in only 11 games. They go to Newcastle today having let in 10 in their last four away matches.

Moreno admitted: “We know we have to improve defensively. We’ve been conceding too many goals. So it’s something we are working on.”

But he thinks Liverpool’s back four are not the only ones at fault.

“Football is a team game, made up of 11 players,” Moreno added. “So to attach blame only to the defenders is a little unfair.”
