Liverpool news: I don’t understand why Jurgen Klopp did not sign Michael Keane - Savage

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp should have signed Michael Keane.

Michael Keane scores first EVER goal for Everton

That is the view of former Leicester midfielder turned pundit Robbie Savage.

Jurgen Klopp was determined to bolster his defensive ranks in the summer transfer window.

He bought in Andy Robertson for £10million from Hull to provide competition for Alberto Moreno at left-back.

But he failed to sign a centre-back to steady the ship and rectify his defensive problems.

Klopp made Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk his top transfer target with the player himself keen on a move to

But Liverpool publicly ended their interest in him after being accused of illegally ’tapping up’ the Dutch international.

The Reds did have renewed faith in signing the former Celtic man when he handed in a transfer request, but the Saints stood firm by insisting he was not for sale.

And the failure to sign a centre-back of Van Dijk’s quality has been evident this season for Liverpool with cracks appearing in their backline on several occasions.

They threw away leads against Watford and Sevilla in the Champions League and they also only managed to earn a point against Burnley last night.

But Savage admits he is baffled as to why  did not move for Keane as an alternative to Van Dijk.

Savage wrote in the Daily Mirror: “I don’t understand, for example, why Klopp didn’t go for Michael Keane when it became clear Saints weren’t going to play ball over Van Dijk.”

The 24-year-old was in fine form for Burnley last season, but in the end was snapped up by Everton.
