Man Utd News: Ander Herrera in Jose Mourinho row and relationship change noted around club

MANCHESTER UNITED star Ander Herrera was dropped by manager Jose Mourinho after he upset him during the tail end of last season, reports say.

Manchester United won the Europa League last year with Herrera starring in the final.

But the much-improved Spain international has fallen out of favour since the arrival of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.

Herrera, however, is likely to make a return to Mourinho’s starting line-up after it emerged that influential midfielder Paul Pogba is facing six weeks out with a hamstring injury.

Yet the Daily Mail claim the reason for his absence in the first place is down to a decision he made during their Europa League campaign last term.

For many Manchester United fans, news of a row with Mourinho will come as a surprise.

The 28-year-old shone last season and many expected him to replace Wayne Rooney as club captain after the former England skipper left for an emotional Everton return.

But the Daily Mail say Mourinho was upset because he invited a friend with close links to Celta Vigo to Carrington shortly before their semi-final clash.

Mourinho supposedly recognised Herrera’s friend and gave the midfielder a dressing down in his office as a result.

Additionally, the change in their relationship has reportedly been noted around the club.

An insider is quoted as saying: “We used to joke that he was Jose's golden boy, and they were always chatting about the game.

“But the dynamic has changed since the end of last season. It's not the same.”

Herrera, meanwhile, thinks the Red Devils are better than they were last season.

Man Utd News: Ander Herrera could replace the injured Paul Pogba

“I think now we can say that we have two players in every position on the pitch,” Herrera told MUTV.

“You have players like Marcus Rashford, a runner who is always looking for the space, and you have [Romelu] Lukaku who can hold the ball in the difficult moments.

“During the game, he can be there holding the ball for everyone, then you have the likes of Juan who can come inside to play football.

“Then you have Anthony Martial who is brilliant in one-against-ones, we have Chris Smalling who is brilliant at defending and Daley [Blind] who can play the ball out fantastically well from the back.

“I know it’s not easy to do what we did last season because we won three trophies, but we are going to try our best.

“I think we’re in a good moment, the club is in a good moment, we have a good understanding with the manager, so I’m very optimistic for the season.”
