Chelsea news: Antonio Conte confirms another injury blow to £35m signing Danny Drinkwater

CHELSEA manager Antonio Conte has confirmed summer signing Danny Drinkwater has picked up a calf injury.

Drinkwater scores impressive goal during Chelsea training

Drinkwater, who signed from Leicester in a £35million deal on deadline day, was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over his former club on Saturday.

The England midfielder missed Leicester’s opening three games with a thigh injury.

And now Drinkwater is expected to sit out Chelsea's Champions League return against Azerbaijan outfit Qarabag tomorrow night with a calf problem.

Drinkwater picked up the injury in training on Sunday, but Chelsea Conte otherwise has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Conte said: “Danny Drinkwater had a muscular problem in his calf and we are waiting to check the problem but only this, yes.”

Chelsea defender and club captain Gary Cahill is back in contention after a missing the last three games due to a domestic ban.

The win over Leicester was the first of seven games in September and Conte expects to rotate his starting line up over the next 21 days.

The Italian added: "You are never relaxed in England, because you have to play a tough league and also FA Cup and also Carabao Cup.

"Now we are starting to play the Champions League. To play 60, 65 games it's normal, but it's not easy.

"In my past sometimes before a Champions League game you rested. In England it's not easy to do this.

"It's normal when you have to play six games in 21 days to rotate my players. I'm very calm about this because I trust my players."
