Chelsea news: Fenerbahce manager says Diego Costa deal was ‘very close’

FENERBAHCE claim they came "very close" to signing Diego Costa from Chelsea ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing tomorrow.

Diego Costa: Conte told me I’m not in his plans anymore

Fenerbahce were pursuing a loan deal for Costa, according to reports in Turkey.

Costa is yet to return to Chelsea for the new season, having remained in Brazil in a bid to force a move to Atletico Madrid.

Atletico's transfer ban means the 28-year-old forward cannot join them until January at the earliest.

Fenerbahce are said to have been negotiating to bring him to the Turkish giants on a short-term loan - but manager Aykut Kocaman has indicated that had fallen through.

"The transfer of Diego Costa was very close. But then the result was negative," Kocaman is quoted by local media.

Costa’s Stamford Bridge team-mate Eden Hazard recently pleaded with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte to reinstate the striker.

Conte is said to have informed Costa at the start of the summer that he is no longer part of his first-team plans.

"Diego and I have been playing together for three years, we have won everything together except for the Champions League,” Hazard told Marca.

“It's a pleasure to play with him, he's a top player and a top person. I would like to see him come back, but I don't make the decisions.

“I hope he can find a solution so that we can see him back on the pitch soon."
