Sanchez, whose contract at Arsenal is up at the end of the season, is wanted by Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side have had a £50million bid for the 28-year-old turned down this week.

City winger Raheem Sterling was linked with a move to Arsenal in a potential swap deal with Sanchez.

However, City do not want to let Sterling go and would prefer a straight-cash move for Sanchez.

Pundit and former Chelsea midfielder Ray Wilkins says the Chile forward would be a great signing for City.

But he thinks Liverpool should have gone in for him and allowed Philippe Coutinho to join Barcelona.

“I didn't think they'd be offering Sterling to be perfectly honest,” Wilkins said on talkSPORT.

“Alright you're going to get Alexis Sanchez, who I think is a more productive player than Sterling at this moment in his career.

“You have got seven years to play with but I did think Sanchez was one of the best players in the Premier League last year.

“I thought he was world class for Arsenal and he makes things happen.

“What I would have done if I was Liverpool, I would have sold Coutinho and brought in Sanchez to Liverpool.”

Responding to Wilkins, talkSPORT presenter Brazil said: "It still might happen mate, got a couple of days."

Sanchez is currently in Chile, preparing for the World Cup qualifier against Paraguay tomorrow (11.30pm).
