Manchester United were linked with Gomes earlier this week after the player told Barcelona he wants to leave the club.

The Manchester Evening News claimed his transfer request had opened up the possibility of a switch to Old Trafford.

But Juventus have muscled in on a proposed deal by sparking talks with Barca officials at yesterday’s Champions League group stage draw.

The two clubs were put into Group D alongside Olympiakos and Sporting.

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, Juve and Barca chiefs met up to discuss a possible switch for Gomes while also arranging their group fixtures.

Mourinho has insisted he is not pressuring executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to dip further into the transfer market after spending £140million on three players.
