Last season he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at French club Tours but has not been able to force his way into Arsene Wenger’s plans and has been allowed to leave.

Arsenal said in a statement: “We'd like to wish Ismael well for the future.”

Bennacer joined the youth academy in 2015 and he made his sole appearance for the first team in the same year in a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.

In January, Wenger spoke highly of Bennacer, tipping him for a bright future.

He said: “He’s a player who is not spectacular, but a very efficient player. He’s the kind of player who, once you put him in the team, you don’t take him out anymore.

“He can defend very well, he’s a fighter, a left-footed player and very efficient going forward. He’s a real box-to-box player.

“He can do all kinds of jobs. He is still young, still lacks a little bit of experience, but is a very promising player.”

Bennacer is one of a number of young players to leave Arsenal in the transfer window.

Chris Willock, Glen Kamara and Dan Crowley are just some of names to have departed.
